Not very good for MAME. I would at least get a Core 2 Duo and 2GB RAM to start with (avoid single core P4).

As fast as you can get. Seriously! What games are you going to try to run?

Correct me if I am wrong but the P4 should run those "old school" games and Dragons Lair fine. Unless you are getting into the more modern games a C2D is overkill...

It should run those. I'm not sure about Dragon's Lair, I don't have it. He won't be playing Crusin' USA or anything like that on a P4 though.

Dragons Lair is nothing more than some video files that you control, the P4 should be fine.

All right I did a little research and I think I have come up with something that should be more than enough. Just need some input cause Im a complete noob.
For the processor: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 3 GHz 1333MHz 6 MB LGA775 CPU BX80570E8400
Motherboard: Gigabyte Core 2 Quad/P45/DDR2-1366+/A&GbE/ATX/DES Motherboard GA-EP45-UD3L
Thanks for your patience.

MAME takes substantially lot more system resources to play "some video files" than your average QuickTime or WinDVD or whatever. We emulate the processor in the game, the processor in the laserdisc player, the electronics and mechanism of the laserdisc player, and we stream minimally-compressed full NTSC broadcast frame (720x480) video out of the CHD, with decoding of the frame information in the vblank area. Don't undersell it
(PS: you know how I keep posting that nobody should mention the names of Digital Leisure-owned properties if they ever want to see them in MAME? Well, you do now if you didn't before ;-)

I have an IBM Thinkcenter 8191KMQ 2.4GHz. If you intend to run arcade games from the PSX era up, you will definitely need a Core 2 Duo or later.
Old 2D games up to the CPS2 era should be fine, my 1.2GHz (Celeron) HP Pavilion 500a could run SSF2 and most of the NeoGeo games with no trouble back in the MAME 0.8x days.
My other two PCs (my current one being an Acer Aspire T310) are both P4-era as well, this one is 2.8GHz and is a Celeron at that, and the third PC is a P4 3.0GHz (Intel board of some kind). None of these can even run Tekken 1 at full speed in MAME.
