CiroConsentino gave you the correct answer. NSS BIOS ROM was updated when 0.140 was released.

Ok just in case it is a serious question, there's Nintendo arcade hardware that uses the SNES components/design, while allowing time-restricted playing of SNES games with the help of an additional controller board/BIOS.
It's nothing special, just similar to PlayChoice-10 or Sega's MegaTech/MegePlay. It's been included in MAME for quite some years now. Maybe you should get hooked off of Outrun and look around

It *is* the MESS driver. MAME also contains working Atari 800, Atari 2600, Atari Jaguar, NES, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, TurboGrafix-16, Philips CD-i, Sony PlayStation, and Commodore Amiga drivers.

I'm not trying to sound like an ass, but why play SNES games in MAME? There are already several SNES emulators that play these games well without a timer or having to figuratively insert a coin.
I'm simply curious.

But of course well-educated MAME users play them in MESS

I already know that this system is just the SNES version of Playchoice. Thanks.

Actually, you're somewhat incorrect.
From what I've been able to determine, at least some of the games ARE different. For instance, the NSS version of Actraiser has signifcantly increased difficulty and the removal of the sim stages. It seems to be harder than the unlockable Professional mode on the home version, in fact, possibly on par with the VS version of Castlevania.

I think he's saying he knows that there was an Arcade SNES, its good that MAME documents this but why would anyone in their right mind actually PLAY the arcade SNES games instead of just using the SNES emulator of your choice? (Yes MESS, use MESS, whatever)

I can work out what pretty much all of those are for except the Atari 800 - what uses that?

Ah, Thanks! Boulderdash was one of my all time favourite C64 games, BTW!

Okay, I can see that, and basically agree. Something of an 'Eats Shoots & Leaves' moment for me there
One thing I'll add to that, though: Firehawke brought up a good point here that some of the NSS games have different gameplay compared to their SNES counterparts, so it's understandable that someone may prefer those versions to the console releases.
But yeah, there're 90325534 SNES emulators out there that make more sense for doing the console stuff than MAME would be.

I don't (I mean I do, but I don't) know why people are so intent on playing these games at all. But I guess some could liken it to the difference between using old vs newer MAME versions.....at least somewhat....

I play SuperNES games with bsnes and Snes9x, Megadrive and Master System with GENS emulator, and PlayStation games with ePSXe.
these emulators are so much better for those who actually want to play these systems.

Probably the most obvious one would be Super Mario World, which lets you select any level to start from, and has no option to save the game (which could be done after completing a castle, fortress, ghost house or a switch palace).

While I typically use Nestopia or FCEUGX for NES emulation, I am prone to playing sessions fairly often in MAME too.
Why?
My first experience with the hardware was in early to mid-1985 when a local grocery store picked up a PC-10 machine. It's quite a nostalgia kick to be able to play SMB in the form I first remember seeing the game in. It doesn't hurt that I have a rather nice arcade stick with a rather similar throw and feel to the original hardware, either.
So, I'll just quietly await the day I can load the default ten carts into the PC-10 emulation and see it precisely how I remembered it, and continue using all three methods of playing the games I own.

Jesus. I thought that set-up, with those screens and clunky navigation, was backward then. I still hate 'em.
