ssf2ghw removed in MAME 0.140
#237203 - 10/24/10 02:58 PM

I just read as usual the list of removed sets in MAME UI chm file and I noticed ssf2ghw (Super Street Fighter II bootleg from japanese MegaDrive version) was removed. Wasn't this set added by Haz? So why removed all of a sudden? That's a mystery so please enlighten us about this.

Probably because it was a hack of a non-arcade game. Did the Genesis/Mega Drive bootleg version ever end up in arcades? Same goes with ZinTricK on the NeoGeo, which uses a hack of the NeoGeo CD console version (the actual arcade prototype is practically non-existent).

ZinTrick has confirmed Arcade version (perhaps only in the location-test). Also Crossed Sword II and Brikinger (I have the Arcade game magazine with Brikinger's ad and it prints 'For Arcade') are too.
These titles are originally for AES/MVS but release platthome is changed in developing to promote NeoGeo-CD.
OST for ZinTrick (with Over Top) is released at 1996 and based sound is ROM version.

Last time I did a full update was in the .dk days. No need to enter the pokerom stage, especially when these days all the 'new' sites haven't been updated since MAME 0.108 or something, or are in multiple gigabyte solid archived torrents with no way of updating the odd set without downloading 300GB to get two 512 byte PROMs added to blahblah.zip for example (almost like trying to get something to run in Linux, dependency issue after dependency issue!).

you need to find reliable MAME torrent site which has up-to-date ROM/CHD sets. and you also need to learn how to use torrent clients, so you won't need to download the whole set to get 512 byte PROM file.

Speaking of package management, I notice that MAME isn't included in Macports.

This isn't a huge deal for me personally, but (lack of a port maintainer for it aside) is there any reason why it could be undesirable to have it included? With the new 'unified' build model for it under OS X, slotting it in shouldn't be a huge nightmare - or have I missed something?

My understanding is that MacPorts does everything POSIX-style. MAME is intended to be built OSX-native, with the native framework version of SDL (MacPorts uses POSIX-style SDL built against X11). There is some support in the build system for POSIX-on-Mac because a few very loud people demanded it, but the resulting build is not supported and I don't want to hear about it when they find out it's slower and clunkier and less compatible with roms.

Hm, OK, and makes sense. I see what you're getting at with SDL-from-ports vs. SDL-from-packages, and SDL does definitely link against X11 when built from ports. FWIW, I built MAME against SDL from both ports and packages a few months back; neither one seemed to have a discernible difference when running, but I really didn't test them anywhere near what could be considered thoroughly either.

Anyway, that's tangental; it definitely makes more sense to pick one version of the libraries and stick with them for sanity's sake. Appreciate the reply

Really? you can download that in about 2 hours in any decent broadband connection... it would take 12 hours in the worst broadband connection you'd probably find... and if you don't have broadband, any kind of update would be a problem anyway I guess...

They're just crybabies. :P I downloaded DVD5s through 56k back in the day... and today you won't see me complaining about downloading at 10KB/s being "too slow" (my connection is 2M "when will TELMEX upgrade it to 4M?").

For that, I'd need a torrent program. Haven't ever bothered to get one.

Last time i downloaded a Windows All in One DVD, BT said we'd used too much bandwidth and cut our speed to nearly modem speeds. I don't know how much bandwidth we have, but I ave neither the space nor the will to lose more speed for 300GBs

There're a few things you can do to make living with Bittorrent easier other than change to an ISP that doesn't have the same restrictions:

- Time the downloading of the torrent so that half of the download falls in one billing period, with the remainder falling in another.

- Restrict upload speeds of the torrent to something low like 2Kbps. This will help to not hammer your transfer limits.

- Get the torrent in chunks of files rather than all at once. This typically doesn't work well with large single files (.ISOs specifically), but you can generally let those go to a certain percentage, stop the torrent, then resume it later when you've got the bandwidth for it.

I sympathise with your position because my ISP does basically the same thing if I go over my transfer cap in addition to charging per megabyte over the monthly limit, and these are basically the same hoops I've been jumping through to work around it. Frankly I'd just change my ISP, but out where I am there aren't a lot of options in that department and they're all worse in one major way or another than what I've got now.

Also, if possible, I would strongly recommend running a firmware on your router that keeps track of inbound and outbound Internet bandwidth usage. Makes it *much* easier to know how close you are to hitting the cutoff point and avoiding it.
