Is it possible in MAMEUI32/64 to enter command line options for games somewhere? Without this option, it's not possible as far as I can tell to run Megatech with multiple cartridges.

Run it from the commandline or use baseline.

How do you run multiple cartridges from the command line? Can't you just choose the game you want to play from the gamelist?

You play single games as normal. The MAMEUI at this time probably isn't programmed to handle images in a way MESSUI does.

Command line example:
mame megatech -cart1 mt_sonic -cart2 mt_gaxe -cart3 mt_beast -cart4 mt_calga -cart5 mt_shar2 -cart6 mt_shang -cart7 mt_revsh -cart8 mt_stbld

You can use up to 8 different carts and they cannot be changed while MAME is running.

I didn't know you could do that. It does not work running mameui64 from the command line. You can also start megatech from the BIOS folder and in the in game menu (tab button) you can choose the files for each cart. This doesn't work either. I'll have to compile regular mame and give it a try.

I knew command-line interaction worked for UI .. perhaps this is something that isn't covered? A normal command-line build works (although remember issues with z80 might cause some problems with switching games). Even if they are megadrive games, there is still a z80 used for them.

You have to make sure that you have the new "HASH" folder and the "megatech.xml" file inside that for things to work. From my quick check of the MAMEUI release, there is none of that. No wonder they do not work!

Where does that come from? It's not included with the source, right?

Should have been. I'll check to make sure.. if not I'll post it.

EDIT: Attached to post. Place or unzip it in the same folder as your .EXE.

That works with MAMEUI from the command line. Thanks!
So is megatech.xml hand edited or system generated? I'm guessing hand edited.

EDIT: You can now choose the BIOS folder then run megatech.
After it loads, you use the in game menu (tab) to select from the software list..

then there is not support for frontends.
I hope command line support gets added.

> I hope command line support gets added.

support is already added: if you launch megatech as described in the whatsnew MAME tries to load the file, but it tells you there is no file with the name you typed because it has no xml list to compare the name you have given.

in other words, as soon as you unzip the file provided by Tafoid in the MAME directory, megatech starts to work because all the required support is already there.

in order to prevent later questions about the parameters, megatech supports now new options -cart1,..,-cart8. you can have one of them, two of them, etc. or none (i.e. you can still launch "mame megatech" with no additional parameters). other systems do not support these options (or might in the future support different ones).

to know which such options are supported by each driver, if any, you have to check the -lx output for <device> entries. each device has an <instance> whose "name" and "briefname" can be used as command line parameters. in this case, the megatech entry of -lx contains 8 devices with briefnames cart1 ... cart8, and names cartridge1 ... cartridge8.
we suggest to use the briefname as options (easier to remember), but you might in principle launch the games also by using 'mame megatech -cartridge1 mt_sonic -cartridge7 mt_calga').

in each <device>, MAME tries to load a piece of software whose name have to match the correspondent entry of megatech.xml. the xml filename expected by the driver is, once again, included in the -lx output: to support this properly, you have to search for <softwarelist> entries and take the "name" present there (in this case "megatech") and look for a "name".xml file in the hashpath selected by the user (by default hash/ )

in future (or to support MESS lists), you might need to consider also the following attributes: "interface" (of each <device>) and "status" (of each <softwarelist>), but they are not strictly needed in this release and I'm not sure you want to add full support at once...

let me know if you need further info

That was a lot of bang for the buck for one post.

thank you for explaining. I'm not gonna add support for softwarelist at this time.
will wait until it's more mature.

one question though: do you know the use for the new "menu" setting in mame.ini ?
the description for it is "enable menu bar if available by UI implementation". enabling it does nothing to MAME.

thanks again.

it's not going to be more mature than this. it's been widely tested in MESS since 0.138, which already makes a few months of work and test

the only thing that might change is replacing <device> with <media> in the -lx output, but other than that, support will remain as is.

of course, take all the time you need to study the better way to handle it, there is no hurry... as you see not even MAMEUI has full support (even if Micko is working on it).

to my knowledge, qmc2 is the only frontend properly support them at the moment

is it in mame.ini? it was expected to be in mameui.ini only

anyway it is used to enable/disable an alternative internal UI (the formerly known newui in MESS), which I think will be enabled in MAMEUI too as experimental...

anyway, it should be not recognized by baseline MAME, only by MAMEUI

ok.
I've did some testing with the new -cart parameters is so you are able to select a different game without exiting the megatech game.
But it doesn't prevent you from running them individually.

I will not support softwarelists in EL for now.

thanks again for your help.

yup. there is no reason to remove the capability of running individual games

fine. just ask if you need more info, if/when you decide to support them

Yes, Micko brought over the MESS newui toggle to MameUI. So you can actually run it w/in Mame games.. it's very disconcerting if you've never seen it before.

Edit: Oh and I added the hash directory w/ xml file to MameUI's dist. packages going forward.

Fair warning: Neo Geo games may only be runnable via software lists in a future version. (This of course would also enable emulation of multi-slot MVS).

Shouldn't those types of games be stored in another folder like MESS does? That is... the BIOS would still go into the ROMS folder and the cartidge files would go into a SOFTWARE folder? Possibly even a zip file containing all of the that system's cart files.

there is no more software folder since around MESS 0.100... and also in MESSUI you only configure a software directory to load by using fullpath, not softlists

the right way to store romsets for softlists is one of the following two: either roms/listname/xxx.zip or roms/xxx.zip (of course you can replace roms/ with any other rompath present in your mame.ini).

This means that MAME expects you to store megatech games either in roms/megatech/ or in roms/. The latter is strongly suggested in MAME, since it allows to load both the single carts and the multicart driver without moving the romsets. OTOH, for MESS systems the former is suggested, in order to facilitate the work to tools like clrmame.

However, from the MESS point of view, you are free to store all roms of all systems together with the bioses. in other words you might well have in roms/ a single bublbobl.zip containing all console and computers ports of Bubble Bobble (say NES + GB + SMS etc.) and MESS would be able to load the proper file when requested

> Possibly even a zip file containing all of the that system's cart
> files.

I would not suggest such a settings, but I presume files would be loaded also in this case

If folks aren't playing , then they aren't playing Mega-Tech games imo. *j/k*

Great to see the system is now working.
