A no fruit machine/pinball subtarget in mame source
#266160 - 10/12/11 05:18 PM

I feel really depressed when I browse mame list now

Anyone interested in working in a "classic" (No FM, no pinball) subtarget?

Just use a frontend with a 'hide mechanical games' feature.

Are fruit machines tagged mechanical?

In MAMEUI, you can filter mechanical games already. Right click the folder you want filtered and check Mechanical. By filtering Mechanical, it removes 8003 games from the All Games list.

I too would like to see a way to compile MAME without all of these games.

A waste of time when frontends give users several options and ways they can customize their game listing to ones specific liking.

you would gain nothing, except a smaller xml output and, hence, less sets to parse with clrmame. but emulation would not change, nor hardware requirements, nor anything...

No really, some frontends have not been updated for filtering mechanical games.

I know my opinion doesn't count, but MAME stands for Mutiple Arcade Machine Emulator. Gambling games were not in any arcade I've ever been in. In my opinion it should be a separate build of MAME or even MESS.

The arcades I used to go always had stereos blasting music. Maybe they should also be added to MAME? Hey, some of the later ones have CPUs in them too, so they should be preserved!

Psst: there's secret phat loot in u7 that wasn't mentioned in the whatsnew. Maybe go look for it instead of bitching about gambling or whatever?

For clarity, are both Pinball and Fruit Machines tagged as 'mechanical' in the code?

Be useful for the FE we are working on, so we can choose to hide them or not.

Thanks.

All games that significantly rely on un-emulatable moving parts are tagged GAME_MECHANICAL. This includes pinball games and fruit machines. But also rare cases like Midway's 18 Wheeler

you are lucky, then.

in Europe there have always been gambling, just in separate rooms (so that kids could not use them)

I've personally seen gambling machines alongside traditional games in arcades in Vegas, and I've seen plenty of pictures of the same in Europe, Japan, and Korea. Even now in the US medal/ticket games (which are gambling minus the playing for money aspect) are common in arcades in theme parks and the like.

The world is a very big place. And MAME is even more intercontinental than eating French toast.

A faster MAMEUI startup surely. Now the MAMEUI.INI file that has to be parsed at startup has about 19000 * 3 lines. Of course the solution should be try to improve the structure of the .INI, not remove games from the list... but in the meantime...

On a side note for who's interested in a faster MAMEUI startup and in a cleaner list: learn how to compile MAME/MAMEUI... take note of the name of ALL those fruit machine games and remove them from MAME.LST file in the source before compiling. All drivers will be compiled I think but those games will not be showed in the MAMEUI list. I still have not tried this workaround, so maybe someone could try and let me know?

Actually a faster way would be to use IV play,if you like using a gui for MAME.that or another FE.I havent used MAMEUI in ages,so I tried it out the other day and it loads PAINFULLY slow. Not sure how you guys put up with it

It's "painfully" slow just for the problem I mentioned above.

QMC2 isn't slow & GameEX offers a nice interface once you get past update game list, which I preform when I'm AFK.

They generate their game list from the XML file output and cache it. MAMEUI reads the entire list of games on every startup, that's the problem. I wonder if it's possible to "tell" to the program to do not read the list every time after it has generated the .INI file the first time you load it.

I don't know about Mameui, but M+GUI starts at about 8 seconds in my system(e6600@3.2 with 2Gb of ram), it uses a 21.5mb cache file. My only complain about M+GUI is that it shows 17 games as missing(when I know there is none), but you can always use dummy files for it.
