Exidy Vertigo screenshots
#279068 - 03/12/12 10:56 PM Attachment: vertigo_screen.jpg 151 KB (8 downloads)

The site that use to host these images went down 2 years ago.
I managed to find a copy to bring here for future reference.
Note in the first picture of the cabinet, you can see "vertigo" on the screen. Also the guys smokin a pipe.

I found one site that claimed the roms had been dumped, but I think that is incorrect.

Some discussion about the game here:

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=163777

Supposedly someone sold a PCB a few years ago. There's also more pictures of the cabinet in the thread.

Did anyone ask H.R. Kaufmann, president of Xidy (current incarnation of Exidy), if they still have any boards or source code for any old games in storage? He's the one who allowed the Exidy ROMs to be put up for free download.

Pictures of the PCB.
Hmm, someone thought to take a photo of the board, and the game has not been dumped? That seems unlikely.

I checked YouTube for the program and couldn't find it, but in the CNBC documentary "Game On", there's a few seconds of Nolan Bushnell playing Vertigo. It's about 14-15 minutes in, and it does bear similarities to Tunnel Hunt/Tube Chase...

Smoking a pipe, eh? That's Nolan Bushnell. Whoever took these shots must have taken them from the same video that CNBC used in their "Game On" documentary (see my post below)...

Found the video... that's not the same Vertigo I played.

(I wished I had owned a camera when I was a kid)

I've played Vertigo at Bally's Great Escape in Lakewood; the one I played was in a full motion cabinet (btw... this is before Galaxy Force II).

I was talking to Gene at Vintage Arcade about it a couple months ago, and he remembers seeing the version I played at a tradeshow one year.

I wish I could describe it better, but the only thing I can remember is the cool cabinet, and it was vector. And that it was awesome, and I was sad when I went in one day and it was gone.

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.

A bit of a late bump, but here's everything we know on Exidy Vertigo.

How can it be a predecessor to Tunnel Hunt when that was realeased in '79?

Tunnel Hunt (Centuri), not Tunnel Hunt (Atari). Tunnel Hunt (Atari) was merely location tested - NOT released.
http://www.progettoemma.net/gioco.php?game=tunhunt
http://www.progettoemma.net/gioco.php?game=tunhuntc

The history is complicated for Tunnel Hunt too, not just for Vertigo. "Tunnel Hunt" was resurrected and killed multiple times by Atari with the same name but slightly different HW and code each time, and one of those times (sometime before the vector->raster adaptation but after Tube Chase - http://mamedev.emulab.it/undumped/index.php?title=Tube_Chase_%28Prototype%29) it went to Exidy from Atari, Exidy tested it and eventually did not release it. Later Exidy made a second Vertigo, and the two Vertigo's aren't related other than in that they're both vector games, have the same name, similar but not identical logos, and both were not released.

[EDIT] Actually just read this.
http://allincolorforaquarter.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-tortuous-history-of-tube.html
and/or this:
http://www.atarimuseum.com/orubin/tunhunt.html

I'm not sure why MAME says 1979 when the Atari version never saw actual release. Maybe that is the date of that particular raster prototype before they turned it over to Centuri later.

Video of the earlier Vertigo has been made available on YouTube again over the last few years.

It appears around the 14:00 mark in "Game On: The Unauthorized History of Video Games", produced by CNBC: http://www.cnbc.com/game-on/

Same scene:

Supposedly it's even on Netflix too.

Bumping this out of interest - I came across mention of Vertigo in a Twin Galaxies annual tournament manual (Video Game Masters Tournament) circa 1986. The manual specifies the required settings on the arcade game for competition, and for Vertigo it indicates that there are no possible adjustments that can be made to the game, and that one could add credits for fuel or continues:

"Pay very close attention to the start of the game. Players can very easily put more than one credit in the game to start giving extra fuel. Valid games will be one credit games starting at the beginning of the game with no continuation."

Interesting. Why do you supposed Super Punch-Out!! says to record the score at the end of the fifth fight, and not include the final fight?
