Passing the Torch

Due of real life issues and concerns, I've decided it would be best to step back and give coordination of the project to someone else who can keep the project moving forward. So, effective immediately, I am passing the leadership of the MAME project to the current MESS project leader, Miodrag Milanovic (Micko).
I would like to extend a word of thanks to everybody that has contributed to MAME this year including developers, testers and individual users alike. I also would like to assure you all that I will not be leaving the project and my stepping back is simply to allow myself a temporary break so that I might concentrate my time on other issues.

Thanks a lot for your superb coordination, Kale. Life is merciless regarding the routines. Hope you can do things better from now.

And... welcome, Micko. Good luck on your new position. You'll really need it, since you'll be coping with two of the most demanding gaming software projects.

Structurally, that was in fact the announcement of that event. The projects will continue to ship as separate binaries, but there's now one team with one leader.

I like either

Multiple Arcade Super System Emulator

OR

Multiple Super System Emulator

but problem is when you abbreviate it, it doesn't spell anything or make sense heh.

Having ability to build either MAME or MESS from one single pool of shared code does seem logical.

Anything that makes this project(s) easier to maintain has got to be a good thing.

Totally agree... one option when compiling, mame, mess, mame + mess seems logical...

WHY NOT???

I hope they will.
(officially, because unofficially it's already done)
Let's hope the work of a certain person (that is not "liked" very much by the team but still very actively contributes), will be appreciated accordingly.

(and no I don't care about love-hate relationships, I don't care about the good or bad character of some people, this is an open source project, not Dallas...)

I'm sure someone must have mentioned this before, it's a good idea to have the sources combined, but at the same time, the official binaries should always be split (at compile / build time) to ensure project(s) identity.

Should be up to the FE of choice, to provide combined / organised lists from both binaries (for users that wish it).

That's my observer view of it anyway.

Creating a mastodon of a project/program would lead to a dilution of it. I hope that in the near future MAME team will realize how wrong is adding mechanical games to MAME and will make decision to remove that ballast from emulator.

I am taking the opportunity to thank Kale for all His work in leading the project and all my best to Miodrag Milanovic for taking the torch. (hot one, I suppose)

While I can agree with that on paper... in real life it doesn't make much sense. MAME and MESS are essentially the same program at this point, they share so much code it isn't even funny. And this is a GOOD thing. There isn't any point in inventing the wheel twice and many arcade systems are offshoots of consoles and vice versa. The only thing the seperate compiles does is make it easier for the end user to manage their romz. That isn't a bad thing, but let's not kid ourselves, that is the only benefit.

I also think that adding the mechanical games into mame was a very smart decision. How long has age mame been around? How long has it been stalled? Addding it to mame does two things.... it gets those ancient games back in the public eye and it preserves them by putting them in an active project.

I honestly don't know why everybody and their brother complains about them really. Their is a very blatent "ismechanical" flag in mame's listxml that any front-end or any rommanger wroth two cents can use to filter them out.

There's no dilution if they're the same codebase, the same devstaff, and bugfixes in one fix things in the other.

The irony, MAME could end up simply being MESS - MESS already stands for Multi Emulator Super System. The title doesn't say anything about being limited to computers, consoles, calculators and the like, so I can't see why arcade and other coin-op equipment wouldn't fit.

I don't think the MAME and MESS developers particularly care about branding. They're not selling anything. About the only things worth considering along that angle is the reputation of the projects-- MESS has an now-undeserved bad reputation. Changing out the name of MESS would probably actually gather MORE interest in the project at this point.

The only thing I care about regarding the name is how unique it is in Google's search results. When I search for "whatever the new name may be" I do not want a crapton of non-emulator results.

These people complain because they put their personal interest over everybody else`s interest. These people complain because they see them selves as the center of the world, they can`t see beyond their own navels. They complain because they are spoiled babes. I believe that they think to them selves: -I don`t like these games, so obviously nobody else likes it.

People, get over it! Grow up! You don`t need to have all the games, store just the ones that you play.

If you complain so much, why not leave here and going to another department, do you have to do?
I love gaming machines! I always had a dream to take home!
I never thought that I had this opportunity to complete my childhood!
Look grows and appears, if you do not like, GET OUT OF HERE!
Children and babies like you do not know what hard work it is an emulation that is sometimes very difficult to decode, (Thanks for all Mame World).
If you want good games, go to a store and buy!
Because if I had money like you and be very rich (You American Donkey), I gave up half of the salary to help the work they do in MAME!
I donīt have this opportunity, because my government donīt give me any job!

I think he means we don't need every ROM of every game preserved.

I agree, I can't see wanting every Street Fighter ROM, I don't play Super Street Fighter 4 that much and I legally own it.

I think its great they're preserved, but do I need them all? no!

MACE it seems I've seen....though I guess I'm thinking of winace...there was an ACE.

Anyways, being partial to arcade games, I'm inclined toward something that emphasizes them. However, my innate spirit of 'top-down-ness', coupled with the possibility expressed in this statement

I thought he meant that for the generic user, they only need the parent roms of the games they want to play, whereas a database or other people might store all roms so that nothing is lost.

Exactly. I really couldn't have said that better myself, Howard; except to add that tremendous benefits have been afforded to both "sides" of the project whenever the two are brought within orbiting distance. Combining them would only lead to more benefits of the sort.

I would also think it would lead to better ports of the project "sides" - for example, I think the allure of porting an "all in one" emulation platform to Android would be far greater than porting either side separately. This could lead to many more people actually creating and maintaining meaningful and useful ports. I'm willing to bet few of them today even know this project COULD emulate a lot of those other computers and consoles. That's a benefit that's only going to become more obvious with time, as more non-Windows systems find their way into the picture.

..and if it ever does happen, I think "Multiple Archaic Machine Emulator" (MAME) would be a great option, because it preserves the most common and popular acronym/logo/trademark while sliding in a more appropriate title. Maximum gain from minimum change. Folders on hard drives, marquees on cabinets, domains and logos on websites, wouldn't have to change. It also underscores the project's focus on preservation rather than "playing games".

Otherwise, just go with "EmuAllSystems" with all credits passed to Reirom.

Man... you really have no clue... you can't read a word and understand... please, go study a bit of English, so you can at least recognize some pronouns.

"They complain" = Eles reclamam

Part of why I stopped responding on this thread is hesitation on this particular topic. There has been a certain amount of bad blood over the topic within the devteam and community at large.

I still PERSONALLY believe that a merge is to the benefit of both sides of the project, but I'm not going to harp on that point any more than I have on this thread already.

That said? I think "Multiple Archaic Machine Emulator" works extremely well, and I would personally vote for that name if such a merge were to happen at some point.

My argument is directed to those complaining about the inclusion of the mechanical games in Mame (I thought I had been clear enough).

Like you, I store every rom I can grab (with the exception of Mess chds, not because I feel they are less important, simply because I don't have enough Hd space for it right now).

About a time machine, I hope it stays in science fiction. Life is complicated enough without corporate greed changing the past to enslave us even more.
