Radeon 6450 1GB 64-bit GTG for MAME and HLSL?
#288720 - 06/05/12 12:34 AM

Currently looking at this card to replace my aging 3450:

I don't run PC games, only emulators. Will this card be enough to run HLSL effects in MAME and not bottleneck MAME performance? I'm mainly concerned about the 64-bit memory interface. My 3450 is brought to its knees by HLSL.

HLSL might be possible with the 6450 you plan on buying (Unknown) However, the developer and creator of HLSL recommends that you have a look at and strongly consider the 6670 because it preforms a lot better.

If you are just into emulators, if you make a decent investment and splurge on something like a 6850 or 6870, you'll be much more able to emulate newer systems or play the newest games with ease.

I looked at the 6670, but I would rather avoid buying a card with a fan if possible. Placing this in a HTPC and want to cut down on as many noise sources as possible.

Does it have to be ATI?

A passively cooled Geforce 9500 GT should do the job.

Not really, but I've had good luck with Ati hardware over the years.

I know you said you would like a GPU w\o a fan,but if you can swing it,you can get a GTX 460 for 134.99 up front,114.99 with mail in rebate.I can vouch that the fans in the 460 are really quiet, you wont even hear them over a movie

That and although requiring some work, you can remove the defaulted heatsink/fan and clean the default goop that isn't worth a crap and replace the paste with something much better. Beleive it or not on my GTX 480 after doing that I got a 40C reduction in heat.

You can also possibly buy some aftermarket heatsink that of course is fanless and dissipates the heat really well without having to give in to a sucky card.

Those heatsinks are so damn huge you will be amazed at how much dust and junk is actually in there when and if you pull the HS completely off.

Clean really well with isopropyl alcohol before you apply the new paste.

You will be amazed with the results and even discover after doing this that you don't need to run the fan at 100% anymore

Monitor temps with evga precision.

I actually use Goo Gone to clean the old paste off the CPU/HSF and then go back over them with alcohol to neutralize the Goo Gone. You have to be careful, applying GG sparingly because it will make a mess real quick! Thermal paste practically melts off using the stuff
