The Awkward Fundraiser :-/
#291559 - 07/12/12 02:22 AM

Here's the deal... There is an insanely rare 1980s Sega game for sale. I spotted it a few days ago and was going to do a DU fundraiser. A few hours later I got word that a collector we are friends with is bidding on it and already has more money for it than I could reasonably raise. I'm not doing a DU fundraiser because DU funds buy boards that get resold and this is going to a dude's collection indefinitely. The game will sell for at least $1,100 at the very least. There is no telling what the ceiling would be because it has never been seen before.

Anyway, again, the collector we know is buying it for himself to keep so this is not a DU fundraiser where I buy a game and dump it and resell for recycle funds. In fact you wouldn't send me any money at all. So I understand passing on the situation. On the other hand if you pledge money would raise our chances of getting the dump and it's probably our only chance of ever getting it. If he wins he will dump it for us for sure and it's someone who has dumped a decent amount of things for us in the past so... Anyway like I was saying...awkward. Your choice. Maybe you don't care about resells/recycle funding so... PM me if you are interested and I can tell you the game and who to get in touch with through the board software. I'm sure you could just do a pledge for now and not send any money unless he wins and I can show you the auction and stuff.

My estimates are a lot higher than 1100. If it ends at 1100 then he/we got extremely lucky. Pretty much no chance of that. Obviously I don't want to name the game on the forum in case some hoarding collectors see it and search for it and find it etc.

To try and be as clear as I can, do not send me money for this... new [Re: Smitdogg]

Do not send me money for this. The money would need to go straight to the buyer, and for now you would just need to tell him you will pledge x dollars toward it if he wins. I don't want any money for it sent to me to forward or whatever.

Can't help being curious, dude:

What's the name of this mysterious, ultra-rare game? And is there some reason you've avoided mentioning that? (Maybe you don't want to attract other bidders?)

I guess you are reading in flat mode or something, I mentioned a couple of posts back why I don't want to mention it by name publicly. You can send me a PM about it if you want.

You should probably save the humor for times when it's not possible to confuse someone with poor English skills into thinking you are serious and not donating and us losing out on our last chance for an 80s Sega game. Just sayin.

The pledge system for this game works like this:

you send me a PM saying you are interested
I send you the guy's username and the game name
you send him a PM and take it from there

Just to back up what Smit says, this is a very, very rare game and it has a suicide battery so hoping to get one in the future is not happening. I dislike that it's going to someone's collection, but at the same time the collector in question isn't evil and has provided a ton of dumps in the past.

Hmmm.. this review of Last Survivor makes me wonder if the iD guys took any cues from it when coding up deathmatch for Doom.
