DU Update: Deco cassette dumps
#303750 - 02/04/13 12:40 AM Attachment: ad.jpg 80 KB (0 downloads)

We've dumped a bunch of tapes and dongles. It is slightly messy at the moment because of cassette dumps getting their ends padded with blank space in mame but (very) roughly it's looking like:

Lock'n'Chase (Japan original no rev)
Pro Tennis (Japan original no rev + fix for incorrect dongle read)
Graplop (Japan original no rev)
Fishing (Japan original no rev, redump with newer tools)
Hamburger (Japan original no rev, redump with newer tools)
Super Double Tennis (Japan original no rev, redump with newer tools)
Burnin' Rubber (Japan original no rev)

Outstanding. If someone over there has Highway Chase and can correct things to where dongle data is verified (dumped from actual dongle) data rather than a guessed-assembled data file, thanks.

Regarding a comment from Haze's exceptional 2012 wrap-up.

>"The list of rare, and mostly forgotten, or even thought to be extinct games emulated
>over the past year is impressive, it’s been a good year for Deco Cassettes all of which
>can be considered rare and fragile. It’s great news whenever one of these is found,
>although the ones we’ve found so far are still only the tip of the iceberg, there are
>plenty more we don’t even have so much as a screenshot for."

Fortunately it is not as bad as compared to in previous years, but it can be better. I'll cross fingers that maybe one or two more titles can be rescued/preserved this year like Hellow Gateball.

*promises to no longer mention/type game name of a certain name of a DECO cassette title for remainder of this year. http://www.progettoemma.net/gioco.php?game=cmanhat *

One good thing is that we've finally got the dumping hardware and utility programs mostly finished and well-tested at this point, so that when undumped games come up in the future they should be easy to preserve. The only tricky part is finding the games now.

Also, *18* Explorer is missing the overlay PCB ROMs. Definitely great progress in the past year, though.

That's outstanding and great work there. Good to know that it is possible to get tapes and dongles duplicated properly for this hardware without having to risk messing up original hardware.

>The only tricky part is finding the games now.

The Hallo Gate Ball (croquet game?) looks interesting.

Another of the cassette usage games I hope can still be fully emulated later is Kee Games' Quiz Show.

I haven't seen any tapes for sale. iirc dwidel may have mentioned some Quiz Show tapes were for sale near his place. That was many, many years ago though in days when MAME relied on XOR files for CPS-2 emulation and the FD 1094 emulation was just underway.

I am certain Quiz Show is likely one of the last 20th century era, cpu-controlled games yet to be emulated that I did actually play in arcades a few times (Magic Mountain in Newhall, CA) in mid 1970s iirc. Every other cpu-control game is already emulated and remaining stuff is either non-cpu video games or electro-mechanical/mechanical games.

And fortunately the following have been found on pcbs and already dumped, so it's not bad if they aren't found, but it would still be better if they were found.....provided that the games actually did exist on cassette tapes as well.

18 Hole Pro Golf, Genesis/Boomer Rang'r, Yellow Cab

I will guess that Manhattan and Angler Dangler were only marketed using cassette tapes. There probably weren't any dedicated pcb versions or else they or the bootleg versions probably would have been emulated long before the cassette tapes versions were emulated last year. One example is Cook Race (a bootleg that Haze eventually identified as a bootleg of Japan's cassette tape version of Hamburger). Cook Race was unknown of what version of Burgertime it was modified from until the tape verson of Hamburger was finally emulated last year.

Hi, there.

I am wondering if anyone else remembers a totally DIFFERENT Lock'n Chase by DECO? It had the same mazes, but with only one tunnel. Also the "hive" with the moneybag had only two exits (not four), making the gameplay much harder. And thus, I'm very exited about the ROMs dumped from "Lock'n'Chase (Japan original no rev)", because I believe that the Cassette version had a totally different ROMset than the Taito version. Maybe it was possible to select a different maze using the dipswitch settings in the cassette version?

The only "proof" I can offer you, is this flyer from TAFA. It is exactly like I remember it (look at the maze in the screenshot to the right) http://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page=flyer&db=videodb&id=3865&image=1

Is it possible to do a ROM compare of the newly dumped "Lock'n'Chase (Japan original no rev)" and a Taito ROMset?

Can't really compare since that particular cassette probably has not been dumped yet, but I am not sure.

Comparing what had been announced last year and current status of file: src/mame/drivers/decocass.c

These 3 have yet to be supported/added:

Lock'n'Chase (Japan original no rev)
Pro Tennis (Japan original no rev + fix for incorrect dongle read)
Graplop (Japan original no rev)

Burnin' Rubber turned out to be Bump 'n' Jump

--
Burnin' Rubber (Japan original no rev)
Bump 'n' Jump (Japan original no rev)
--

And these 3 were added.

--
Fishing (Japan original no rev, redump with newer tools)
Hamburger (Japan original no rev, redump with newer tools)
Super Double Tennis (Japan original no rev, redump with newer tools)
--

Of the cassettes that were announced last year, but not yet supported, I am not sure if the cassettes were not readable or dongles missing.

There are still a sizeable number of alternate versions of DECO cassettes (dongles included) yet to be found and supported.

Well, if the Cassette version of Lock'n Chase hasn't been dumped yet, then it really shouldn't be playable, right? My guess is that someone "cheated", and assumed that the driver used the same ROMs, and that there were no different settings on the dipswitches. Time will tell, I just hope that I will be able to play it again someday!

i would love to figure out a way to playback the tape dumps into actual hardware, as i have a few deco systems, would be cool to use some form of digital playback device to replace the tape mechanism.

In theory this shouldn't be too hard to do but then I don't know how the DECO architecture works so I could be entirely mistaken
