3D Space Harrier emulation - fantastic translated article on Sega's site
#317942 - 11/27/13 03:44 PM

Huge article translated from Japanese here, all sorts of interesting information about how they ported Space Harrier into 3D (the same team did the Sega Rally arcade port on PS2):

a second article on Sonic 3D! new [Re: VirtuaIceMan]
#318204 - 12/04/13 10:21 AM

And another article, on how they made Sonic into a 3D game by reimagining the Megadrive as a more powerful console!

Jesus, the idea of a Gigadrive was keeping me awake at night when I was in middle school. Thanks for pointing me to that series of articles. I will now go buy a 3DS !

Those guys are awesome. Staying that close to the emulation ideals and then going the extra mile for a five-buck port is something you don't see anymore.

P.S: I guess everyone interested saw the Super Hang-On article too ?

I got too hopeful and thought that it was about the Mega drive/Saturn game Sonic 3D, not the original Sonic in 3D

Yeah, I'm very impressed by what they do, as opposed to the more "do the minimum to cash in" feeling of many other commercial emulators.

And giving the complete specs of the "GigaDrive" including memory map is just awesome.

Whilst I agree I meant the 2.5D game :P

Mind you, I kinda hope they don't try finish since there'd be such high expectations and Sonic hasn't had many great games recently so trying to finish Xtreme could be like Duke Nukem Forever whereby it's considered crap because of the long wait an disappointment despite being fun.

Quote:

YO: Keep in mind that there’s an arcade version of Altered Beast, but unlike the arcade version, the MegaDrive version has two layer scrolling, and without those two layers, you really don’t have a foothold to start working on stereoscopic 3D. The arcade version basically doesn’t have any parallax scroll at all.

Uhm... Okay. In the arcade version - when you kill some of the enemies -pieces of them fly forward, which was actually scaling the sprites (I guess). IIRC, there was no scaling in the Genesis version.

I hate to say it... & the nicest way to say it is - this way was easier.

eta:

Alrighty, I see what they mean.

I'll get to the point and say it would be nice if they could redraw the backgrounds and foregrounds of the arcade version, then put them on different layers. But I guess that wouldn't be 'accurate' (or maybe the arcade version couldn't handle it?). If we're so worried about accuracy then just throw out the 3D.

/end rant.

Is it just me or does the sound from the MegaDrive/Genesis version sound lacking in that video? I played that for hours when a megadrive was pretty much my only console and it never sounded that bad.

Another thing, IMO Random Beasts isn't the best idea. It might be fun in the 'random' department, but each beast has it's own abilities - just as bosses do (Capt. Obvious). For example, you're going to burn through a lot of continues if you use the Bear against the Eyeball-Spewing Plant boss of stage 2.

To each their own and good luck to anyone that does this.

eta: Having had the Genesis version - I knew there were some cheats to that, I thought (wondered if) they'd be the same, then checked out that site. So there ya go.
