Good find there.

If all the roms can be sent in thanks. That clone set should be eventually added to

/src/mame/drivers/galaxian.c

The Irem version is currently not listed on System 16 at this time.

I'm hesitant to believe it is not something produced recently. You have the snapshot as the Taito copyright version of Galaxian and it would not take a lot of hex editing skill to change the letter graphics.

But, if it's real from a real PCB found in the wild - we need PCB pictures, actual labels noted and any other supporting evidence.

Use the email mentioned here to send in what you have:

It may be just a hex edit
the roms are not original to the board
Ebay link of the board I bought

I was just checking the roms before I hooked up the board
and found 2 that didn't match so i dropped them in mame using the taito set
I guess one is the mask and other one is IREM
gl-01.1j
gl-02.1k

If not supported in MAME, they could be supported in MisfitMAME/HBMAME imo so at least they will be documented in some way until further evidence is found later.

I purchased a couple manuals from the seller last year.

I can understand cautious approach, but I am not sure if there would be anything to really gain if someone altered the name from one company to another and left everything else alone....unless they could hack it to play Bouncer instead...now that would be a trick and a pcb worth tons of money when auctioned off.

I believe it might be real thing, but do agree that more confirmation is needed such as if Irem had flyers or any advertising that they were also marketing Galaxian back then.

Time to get Keith Smith's opinion on this or maybe Andy Welburn's too.

I had my doubts about actual existence of both Allied Leisure Zap or Atari Crossfire when first seeing those names in 2000 or 2001 when wandering around on various emu sites back in the days and over the years they were eventually confirmed and one of them now playable when using DICE.

Thanks for making photos available for reference. I don't know if Irem had distributed flyers marketing Galaxian back then, but if Irem had late 1970s flyers printed then, most would primarily be Japan region only. Dan H. (TAFA) was able to find a few late 1970s Japan region Irem flyers, but they are hard to find.

Maybe someone from Japan (Asian region) might be able to provide confirmation later.

this didn't start out as a Taito Galaxian
maybe it started life as a uniwars if not galaxian
every Taito Galaxian board i've seen had the black connectors
I think maybe taito got the boards unpoulated from irem

Since I think it was before Irem started etching Irem on their boards, about the only thing you could do is compare it to other Irem boards from the 70s and make an educated guess. It doesn't belong in HBMAME either way.

Yeah, except it could just be a hack on a uniwars board.

The rom labels would probably be similar to Uniwars if that was the case, but because of the hardware and the logo looking so shitty I don't think this is going to get to a 100% sure decision. We can't let paranoia go too far though or otherwise we might as well mark everything bad because someone could have lifted rom stickers, erased them and then reprogrammed them with a hack just to be a dick.

Yes, I understand the issue.

I'm kinda confused why he said "the roms are not original to the board"

Because I don't know how you'd tell. That and turning up with a license version of a game that nobody has ever heard of is a little suspicious.

Seeing a dump of all the roms would be interesting, as far as I can tell we don't have them yet.

man you people are crazy
look I bought what I thought was a Taito Galaxion
but when I checked the roms 2 didn't match so I figured maybe they were corrupt.
so I dumped them into mame and this is what I got
and I'm saying there not original to the board because someone crossed out in red pen the label on the roms

I have no idea wether this board was A uniwar s or not
but I figure since there are no taito stickers then it's either A uniwar s or an actual irem galaxian

I've always wanted to get a hold of a unwar s to compare to the galaxian and now I want one to compare with this board

EDIT: Roms have been forwarded to Dev Team.

all I can find is pics of the stack but not of the parts
side

don't know if anyone noticed the 3 extra chips on mine compared to the taito
and the missing 74367
well not missing since it was never placed

Thanks for doing this and taking pcb photos too.

Actually nothing new because there has been previous back and forth disagreements way back during the days of when there used to be old MAME.net web site run by Gridle. There was a long ago issue in which MAME founder Nicola S. had removed a fair number of roms sets because they came from pcbs in which roms were modified via "graphics hacked". When Aaron Giles took over a lot of those early decisions by Nicola were rescinded and the removed rom sets were once again supported in MAME.

If you weren't visiting old MAME.net web site [long gone] many years earlier, you missed out on a lot of heated threads there.

Fortunately wolf676 knew where to find more info.

Not my area, but there should be others familiar with this pcb hardware that can help out.

Someone should go for the jugular with a blank pcb with an 8080 cpu and claim it is a Bouncer or Parasol Stars pcb. Shoot for the moon...why settle for doing it small?!

>Did this guy scan flyers just to make teaser thumbnails?

I am guessing the site owner's thought of: "...maybe none of the visitors care about seeing a larger size view of the flyer, but just want to read the text on the web page."

iirc The specific Taito flyers from the Taito company (Japan region) came from their company web site many years earlier when TAFA had just started in 2000.

http://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page=ar...rch+the+Archive

The scans were too small and Dan H. came to the rescue and uploaded larger size scans of some of those same flyers. Several previous flyer scans were replaced by Dan's upgraded flyer scans. I hope he continues in the future and finds more flyers and uploads them to TAFA. I am guessing Dan is on a break at this time.

Parasol Stars would be tricky to pull off with an 8080.

Porting the console Parasol Stars to the arcade PCB that used PC engine chips would be entirely more believable.

just an update for those interested
I did find a post of another found irem galaxian
http://blog.system11.org/?p=2016
and yes the rom names are the same so I guess irem crossed them out when they were good I just assumed they weren't orignal because of that

also the five chips on one of the boards were all toast and could not be read

only 2 good roms were dropped in mame in the taito galaxian
and that's how all this started

so the five roms that were bad were replaced by me from taito and yes uploaded to dev team along with 2 good roms from other board
was too afraid to say that then because people thought it was a hack but after finding the post on System 11 I think it's safe to say it is real except the five roms that were unreadable

I think the board was hooked up wrong
that board had e few dead shorts that I never did track down

well I think I've held on to this for long enough so i'm looking to sell it and will be putting it up on ebay soon

if someone would like it pm me with an offer
remember it's got dead shorts on one of the boards but it's a rare one that's for sure
I just would like to pass it on to someone that can fix it

Pardon about the drama then. It's too bad that there were suspicions at the time although I can understand why with specific items. What was not available then [2014] was some form of proof that time if believable or not, but the September 2017 https://www.flyerfever.com/post/164966832988/galaxian

update from FlyerFever finally provided actual proof with the Irem flyer showing a
PT - Galaxian [ie: cocktail table variety described as Play Table] as a product. It's too bad the flyer wasn't around a few years earlier for reference.

iirc there used to be a hardcore Galaxian fan [I forget the username] that posted here in the past, but I believe he hasn't posted since a few years ago and isn't visiting here these days.

Good luck with seeing the pcb gets a decent price and hope pcb can be fixed by someone later. Other posters here might have better places to recommend for selling pcb besides an auction place. Visit back in a few days later to see if others have places to recommend.
