Arcade VGA 3000 vs 5000 PCIe
#323993 - 03/31/14 05:34 PM

HI im building my first MAME with original CRT monitor and was trying to find more information on what would be a better choice between the 3000 and 5000 Arcade VGA cards.

I heard the 3000 is very stable on XP however the 5000 has issues on WIN 7 with stability... also people have stated that XP is the way to go for stability and performance again depending of CPU and PC build. Just wanted to know if anyone has tried both? I also noticed DVI outputs on the 5000 compared to the 3000 that didn't have any , I know they have different chipset on the card but again not sure which one would be best for my setup. Any recommendation would be appreciated.

thanks again

Rich

XP is *never* the way to go for performance; best performance for Windows is always achieved with 64-bit MAME running on 64-bit Windows 7. I understand that it's challenging to use that setup with 15 kHz monitors, but on an absolute basis you cannot beat it for MAME performance.

greatly appreciate the feedback...yes that would be best I really wanted to have that vintage look..so I guess ill take a shot at maybe the 5000 running win7 and see what happens.

For that 'vintage', arcade monitor look, have you tried using HLSL shader effects? They do a bloody good job of replicating the look of the old arcade monitors.

The performance of MAME64 on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is comparable to Windows 7 64-bit.

For people running real arcade monitors, XP x64 is the best choice, especially when running GroovyMAME with Calamity's modified ATI drivers (CRT_EmuDriver) and a compatible ATI video card (see my signature for links).

However, for people running LCD monitors, Windows 7 is the way to go.
