How does this jibe with MAME policy?

What policy do you believe is being violated? The games are streaming so no ROMs are being distributed (or executables for that matter). Internet Archive is a non-profit organization that is not selling anything; they don't even have ads on those pages.

So, when the ROMs are streamed, where are the streamed to?

Also, by your logic, I can legally set up a free website that streams Disney movies as long as I don't sell anything or show ads.

"Jibe". The word you're looking for is "jibe".

Flight Attendant: "Does anyone here speak jive?"

Passenger: "Yes, I do."

*terrible attempt at quoting the movie, "Airplane!"

Ok, Yeah I'll fix that and blame it on being a typo.

You have to use latest Firefox due to Mozilla and Google arguing over the interpretation of standards.

Officially, MAMEdev has no position on the religious implications of these "phenomena".

They post their source on github, so they're more than fine as far as derivative builds go.

I'm also entertained that you (and the tech press) didn't care for the last year when they were doing the same thing with consoles/computers and MESS.

I never said there wasn't a potential legal issue. The OP asked if it violated MAME policy, not if it violated the copyright of the ROM owners. It is the responsibility of the copyright owners to enforce their rights (if they choose to do so), not MAME. For all we know, Internet Archive has some sort of license agreement with Atari, Exidy, Midway, etc (though I seriously doubt that). They also claim that they will immediately take down any disputed material if they receive a complaint from the copyright holder. Internet Archive generally takes the view that "everything not explicitly prohibited is allowed" as apposed to the more common view of "everything that is not explicitly permitted is prohibited". Personally, I find that view refreshing, though it certainly carries some serious legal risks.

It is generating some press coverage, on some computer / game related sites anyway. Here's one article I noticed / stumbled across while gulping down a quick coffee:

Well I personally couldn't care less was just curious what the basic consensus was with the devs.

As for the consoles/computers and MESS situation I have no knowledge of it as I had none of this until I saw one of the tech articles like you mentioned.

Honestly, until just recently I hadn't even visited this site in quite some time!

OH. I thought it was a java issue, as some 80s games sites I looked up in connection with this topic wouldn't display the game picked, and would show a java error....although fixing that by changing the java security settings didn't fix the Internet Arcade display....
