Document text files are messed up & scrambled together
#334682 - 11/27/14 07:13 AM

The MAME document text files that are included with the official binary are all messed up and scrambled/bunched together. Open up some of the text files, such as whatsnew.txt and all other documents that are included in the Docs subfolder and you'll see what I mean. These documents were never all messed up like this in previous releases. I hope this gets fixed.

(Yeah, I know I can fix it by opening all the files, save them as .RTF [Rich Text Files], and then resave them back to .TXT files. But users shouldn't have to do all this... it should already be appropriately formatted for the users, like it was in the previous releases.)

It might be a consideration we need to afford Windows users and was overlooked as this is the first release using the GIT source tree. Files kept there have Linux (CR only) line endings. If you use Windows and don't have anything else but default viewing tools, use "wordpad" to properly view files of this type without having to resave. Notepad cannot handle CR only and require the Windows standard CR+LF.

That's what I did. I opened them with Wordpad, then saved them as RTF, then opened the RTF files in Wordpad, and then saved them as TXT files. This fixes the problem so they can be viewed properly in Notepad.

Hopefully it will be fixed for the next release.

I figured that was the cause.

If you use Wordpad or some other competent text viewer they'll show fine. Nobody should ever use Notepad for anything (unless it's Notepad++).

What I find funny is that even edit.com works with UNIX line endings. Even in its first release, when it was still part of QBASIC with the /EDITOR switch, which removes the program code checks since trying to make a plain text file in QBASIC would be a pain in the ass, but even with numerous error dialogs it would still be better than EDLIN.

Notepad is a derelict app left practically untouched since Windows 3.x - the only difference is that the one in Windows 98 and later lets you change fonts (in Windows 95 you were stuck with Fixedsys), and the Windows ME version removes the error dialog about it being unable to load files larger than 32KB (while closing automatically and opening the file in Wordpad since they didn't actually fix that). Also, the 3.x/9x/ME versions didn't support Unicode text files either.

Use srcclean.exe to convert to the format you are used to.

You may also want to take a look at the following:

http://waterlan.home.xs4all.nl/dos2unix.html

unix2dos can handle the conversion for you on the commandline. May be handy as an option depending on what you're looking for.

THIS PROBLEM IS STILL NOT FIXED. IT'S ANNOYING TO HAVE TO RESAVE EACH AND EVERY .TXT FILE TO THE PROPER FORMAT. ANNOYING... KIND OF LIKE READING A POST IN ALL CAPS.

You release it one more time like this and I'll snap off your cajones and boil them in motor oil!

Just use a half-decent text editor and you'll have no problems.

Sure, but we shouldn't have to. It should be formatted to be correctly displayed in the default Notepad program... like it always have been.

I suggest you ask for a full refund, rather than making annoying posts containing stupid threats. It's an open marketplace, no-one is forcing you to use MAME/MESS. If your requirements for an emulator include changelogs with MSDOS line endings, I'm sure you'll find an offering more suited to you than MAME.

I don't think they will change it for you. You can use srcclean (a tool that comes with MAME) to convert to the format you want.

You should be complaining to Microsoft about this, not MAMEdev. There is no excuse for Notepad to be 20 years out of date.

You're assuming that Notepad formats things correctly.

All of the text files look fine using the following programs: Notepad++, Chrome, IE, MS Word.

Looks wrong in: Notepad, Wordpad

Just because it looks wrong in the Windows default program, doesn't mean it's formatted incorrectly.

Notepad++ is free, and I pretty much haven't used plain 'ol Notepad in years.

I think Wordpad is fine.

Almost. With the "default" settings, it's better than Notepad, but not perfect. And since BK wants everything working at "Windows default," I assume he won't be happy with it.

There is literally one program across 5 operating systems that gets these files wrong and dozens that get them right. Replace your Notepad with Notepad++ as advised (it's a free goddamn download, so no excuses) and voila.
