Bubble Bobble and Wonder Boy / Adventure Island series are quite complicated and have many titles.
so i made chronological / relation charts of these series:
Bubble Bobble Series (PDF, SVG, PNG)

For your pleasure, a new Bubble Bobble and a new Puzzle Bobble. You need to have an account for the Korean "Kakao" messaging app in order to play them. And also being in Korea, I guess, since I could not download them from my country even after creating a Kakao account (just for playing them!)

Fully Taito licensed, both released at the end of 2014 if I'm not wrong.
They look good, even if microtransactions may be their gameplay grave.

thanks a lot for the info, bisboch!! i updated my Bubble Bobble chart with those two entries.
btw, i could download Bubble Bobble for Kakao APK. i'm sending the link to you in PM. but i couldn't get Puzzle Bobble for Kakako... 
EDIT: i could even run Bubble Bobble for Kakao on my old Motorola Atrix 4G phone with Android 2.3.6. but couldn't get to gameplay, probably due to my failed touch screen. if anyone's interested in it, i'll provide the link to APK via PM.
any chance, someone can get com.gumikorea.games.puzzlebubbleforkakao APK?

it is official part of Puzzle Bobble series - i found this game by browsing Japanese Wikipedia Bubble Bobble template.

just for the giggles, i created the following chart:
Bubble Bobble WTF (PDF)
that's chronological chart of main-line Bubble Bobble games with all available subtitles and their inconsistencies.
so, we got three OFFICIAL Bubble Bobble 2, and two OFFICIAL Bubble Bobble 3. 
should i add rumoured subtitles like that? :
[Lord_Nigh] whats really weird is i saw a new zealand story japan machine at a doctor's office 20 years ago, and it said "the story of bubble bobble IV" or something on it
or this one? :

i have a theory, where Bubble Bobble could originate from (main character - bubble dragon):
Gummi Bears, a Disney cartoon:

(see 19th episode - Bubble Trouble).
it was released on December 14, 1985 and Bubble Bobble was released in 1986. Fukio Mitsuji might see that episode and model Bub and Bob after it.

Gummi Bears was broadcasted in Russia in 1991-1992. i discovered Bubble Bobble on ZX Spectrum in 1992-1993, and my first thought was that the game is based on that cartoon!! i even wrote it down in my Bubble Bobble instruction set for ZX Spectrum (in 1993):

Quite possible! Some sources say exact Japan release date for Bubble Bobble was August or September 1986. You would have to verify with Fukio Mitsuji to see if he was inspired by this or if inspiration came from another source (and also to verify when development *began*).

Fukio Mitsuji died on December 11, 2008. the only possible way to know what inspiried him to create Bubble Bobble could be Japanese magazines or interviews...

Have you considered the mobile phone games? Taito released Puzzle Bobble games for J2ME and iMODE phones. I had a pirate copy of the J2ME Puzzle Bobble on my NEC e616. It looked shit because it was designed for a phone with a lower resolution (ugly borders showing garbage) but it played OK.

yeah, i also owned J2ME version on my old Motorola's V3 and V9. they are also listed on:

but i don't consider them as "important" releases, they are more like re-releases of original Puzzle Bobble. plus, there is no space left for Puzzle Bobble column!!
