[solved] updated Mame forks with custom keys

Hello. I have been away from emulation for a while (10+ years), but recently I decided to build a retro arcade. Sadly I found out that Mame Plus is no more, so I ask you fine folk: Is there any MAME fork that is up-to-date (or method in MAME official) to assign key combinations like you can in MAME+ and Kawaks? Example: keyboard F can be mapped to simulate button1+button3.
Thank you

That's worked in baseline MAME forever.
Select button 1, hit enter, hit Escape to clear assignment, hit enter, hit the key you want for button1 (e.g. Ctrl), hit enter, hit key you want for button1+button3 (e.g. F).
Select button 3, hit enter, hit Escape to clear assignment, hit enter, hit the key you want for button3 (e.g. Space), hit enter, hit key you want for button1+button3 (e.g. F).

Thank you very much, Vas Crabb!
It is indeed a clever solution.
