Infos > General Info and Mamescore are messed up

When you load MAME. And you click on the Infos tab, the General Info and Mamescore are all messed up. There are boxes [] everywhere. And if you scroll through the tabs a few times, MAME crashes.
There is probably an error in either/or MameInfo.dat, History.dat, and Story.dat that is causing this to occur.

This is a font issue. U+200A "Hair Space" is used for alignment but somehow your display font lacks it. What OS do you use?

I am using Win XP 32-bit
I've never had this problem in previous MAME versions.

Have you tried a freah MAME install ? Delete config files, mame.ini; ui.ini
If that doesn't work, you might need to install extra ttf fonts in WinXP. What fonts are you missing... that I don't know.
MAME is going thru many changes lately regarding Unicode support.

Upgrade to a supported OS? It's probably just a side effect of Windows XP having poor font coverage.

Out of curiosity, if you re-install 177 does it display properly?

You probably have missing .ttf fonts. Windows 7 have a few fonts now available in WinXP. The most important font is "Segoe UI".
Have you tried to change MAME's UI language (Config Options / Customize UI / Language) ?

Yes, it's displayed fine in previous versions. So that means something in the new version must be causing it.

Liberation Sans is not listed as an option to choose.

I was trying out random, different fonts in MAME to see if I could find a font that would fix the problem. At first, all the fonts I tried did not fix it. But then I remember you mentioned the recent changes in Unicode support. I know nothing about fonts, so I tried the only two fonts in MAME that has the word "Unicode" in it's title, Arial Unicode MS and Lucida Sans Unicode. Both work and has fixed the problem. But I'm not crazy about those fonts. I like the default font that MAME uses. Is there any way I could somehow make it work with MAME's default font? (without upgrading my PC)

When you click to download a font on that website, it redirects you to the microsoft website font page where you have to buy it. I'm not going to pay for fonts.

Select all font files, mouse right-click on the fonts and select "Install".
This will install the fonts in Windows XP. Any program will see those fonts now.
I recommend rebooting WinXP to make sure the new fonts are properly installed.
Start MAME. The new fonts should appear in the fonts list.

If I am not mistaken, if it's a .ttf file, you simply double-click on it.
Windows will then install the font.

I tried right-clicking on the font files but there was no "Install" option listed to select in the context menu. But I figured out how to install them. I went to Control Panel > Fonts directory and copied them in there and it automatically installed them. But only two of the six Segoe Fonts that was included in your download were recognized by MAME. And they were the Segoe UI and Segoe Print fonts. And when I enabled them, the error I was having in MAME still existed. So I had to switch back to the font Arial Unicode MS, which is one of the only fonts that works properly for me.
What is the name of the official default font that MAME uses?

So true. But the issue finding one from the trash is that the meth head people want the metals for cash trade in. More drugs.

You can download Liberation Sans free here: http://www.dafont.com/liberation-sans.font
(and at a few dozen other sites, Google is your friend). It looks a lot like Arial, which is the default font MAME picks on Windows.
