Pretty kewl article by Popular Mechanics.
http://www.popularmechanics.com/technolo...=pop&dom=fb
Of course, to get my year in there, 1969, that would have been pong.
That's also the same year Ralph Baer executes the first ever rage quit.
For some of you, the most popular video game the year you were born may have been an oscilloscope?

As far as the 1990s games on that list, not a single mention of Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, or Half-Life?
That's hard to believe.

Eugh, they have a Sonic 2 screenshot for Sonic. Also, no mention of Street Fighter II? How did they measure popularity?

I'm not sure what they've used actually
it's based on
which is Sonic 1, but made widescreen, and with Tails pasted in. I'm guessing it's fanart stolen from somewhere else. The final scene on Sonic 2 was different.
either way, utter shit 'article' just one of those clickthrough clickbait things that are as bad as viruses.

I have no idea which arcade game was the most popular in the year 1967, but two of the arcade games released in 1967 that seem to be the most popular *now* are the electromechanical pinballs "The Wiggler" (by Bally) and "Melody" (by Gottlieb).

I don't think there was a most popular game during the video game crash of 1983. I couldn't even think of taking on the golden age of video games.

What are we meaning by popular anyways? In '83 was when I started playing vids very much, and when I encountered my favorite games: Xevious, Gyruss, and Star Wars. '83 was a fucking great year in that regard. Dragon's Lair for honorable mention, because I thought it was way cool, but I sucked at it. In fact, most of the great games of '82 I encountered in '83.
'71, who fucking knows. My earliest memories of vids are of the neighbor kid's 2600, probably in '77.

It still would have been hard to top the likes of Pac-Man, Space Invaders (including Galaxian/Galaga, and Xevious as you mentioned, moving away from the space theme), Donkey Kong, Dig Dug/Mr. Do and the other golden age era games.
That said, one of my all-time top Atari 2600 games was Battlezone, released in none other than 1983 - how they managed to program a 3D third-person shooter on the 2600 is a miracle in itself!

Wow. That really makes me feel old when my birth year is earlier than the list starts at. Ouch.

Like most of us here, I predate this list, but Space Invaders was the top game the year I was born.

Coming in late on this one, but I had to comment after facepalming at the actual article
No Mega Man 2, no Final Fantasy, no Gradius 2, no Pac-Man, no Donkey Kong. Then they mangled the aspect ratio on Super Mario World.. and Zelda 2 most popular for 1987? Somehow I doubt that.
Yeah, this list is pure junk. Where's the methodology for how they determined popularity, anyway?
Oh, and that Sonic 1 is the iOS/Android version with the unlockable Tails/Knuckles.
