Pebble Beach on STV is kind of hilarious
#364551 - 03/22/17 07:02 AM

They seemingly use every graphic trick in the hardware's book on unimportant horseshit like text and James Bond camera swirl in attract mode and so on but when you actually get into the gameplay it's the worst. Graphic detail disappears until you're at a standstill, the framerate is a slideshow and the ball drives can't even seem to climb elevation, they are weird line drives, even the water duplicates its detail section to section in a bizarre way like anywhere on the water you are looking, the waves are identical. I won't say what went wrong, I'll ask what went right?

it just seems like all the other T&E Soft golf games to me, in terms of the actual golf engine, the slow presentation etc. I think they aim for a 'simulation' angle or something.

they were popular / famous in Japan at least.

I just checked it out in mame and aside from the awful glitches, the framerate is way higher than the pcb so I guess my post doesn't make as much sense to mame users as it should. I guess there are youtube vids.

can't remember much about how that game works, but wouldn't surprise me if they're software rendering it on the SH2s, that seemed to be T&E's style. The SH2s in MAME run a fair bit faster than real SH2s because they assume 'best case' for cycle counts, no waitstates etc. Even if they're not software rendering it, our VDP timings are also best case afaik.

but yeah, if you want an example of their other work...

There's a Saturn one too which I guess will be similar to Pebble Beach, and apparently some for the Japanese systems (PC98 etc.) but as you can see they're all rather slow paced.

The PS2 one seems a bit faster and moves away from that formula a bit.

I do end up asking myself the same thing about the IT golf games tho, to me they're terrible, full 3d engine, but you have to select your shot angle in steps of about 30 degrees?!

My favourite golf games will probably always be the 'Everybodys Golf' ones. I have World Tour and 6 on the PS3, imported 6 on disc from Asia because it didn't get a physical release in english elsewhere, only digital. WT (5) doesn't look as good, but the gameplay seems better, 6 has some irritating changes like only being allowed to use the putter when on the green, making some shots impossible (ones with steep hills where ideally you'd use a normal club to chip it, and could do that in 5)
