You'd have to ask sarayan, I'm not involved with that code at the moment.

Until the necessary resources and/or interest is present to improve Votrax (speech) emulation, keep MAME 0.180 around in a separate folder along with the respective samples for the impacted games, such as Gorf, Q*bert, and Wizard of Wor.

Download MAME 0.180 - 30 Nov 2016 release - from here:
http://www.mamedev.org/oldrel.html

Game sound samples available here:

Appreciate the heads-up on that post from MG providing a modified 0.189 enabling Votrax sample support.

In my prior response, it was mentioned to maintain a separate folder for the previous (0.180) version of MAME. This is opposed to keeping it contained within the same folder along with the most recent (0.194) release; reason being in light of the video filter support.

If there are any difference to hlsl/bgfx/etc. files between releases, it may result in a blank video screen if such filter(s) are applied. By keeping the respective previous executable in sync with the corresponding files related to video options of that version, it aids in preventing the aforementioned or other video related issues from transpiring.

Whether it's 0.180 or 0.189 is a moot point from this perspective. As more time passes and newer versions of MAME are released this likelihood increases (If not already very much present with both versions).

Nonetheless, again link is appreciated.

MAME has the most comprehensive whatsnew in emulation. CTRL-F it for "Votrax" and see for your self instead of wasting board users' time.
