Savage Quest Setup - Version 2.1
#368156 - 07/24/17 10:09 PM Attachment: IMG_1013.JPG 1025 KB (0 downloads)

Hey Everyone Long time huge fan of Mame.
Huge Praise to you guys for getting "Gauntlet Legends and Dark Legacy to work".

Glad to see so many Developers enjoying bringing back old or rare arcade games.
I hope you guys are still working on Savage Quest and hope you continue to support it being I haven't really come across any other versions of this game.
Except for the 1 setup I have.

I was able to find a rare version of the game 2.1 and after 1 year friend and myself completed the project of trying to make a smaller version of the arcade and made this custom joystick for it, with a dip switch on the back and credits button.

I guess in the MAME emulation part the game plays up to a point but it needs decryption of the security dongle and some dev stuff dealing with the voodoo 2 3dfx code.

Hope someone helps to finish it cause it is a very rare game that I am trying to help keep alive.

Thanks For Reading and hope you enjoy the setup.

Hi there,

First of all, nice setup!

We know of the issues of Savage Quest in MAME and hope to have them fixed at some point. It's also effectively a late 1990's PC and we're nearing the age of our being able to emulate those at a decent speed. (An x86 dynamic recompiler core would also help the performance a lot.)

We'd also really appreciate a hard drive dump from a pristine Savage Quest 2.1 install, which I guess you have unless you've touched a lot of the files on the hard drive. The 2.1 revision is undumped. https://mamedev.emulab.it/undumped/index.php?title=Savage_Quest

If you'd like to help us, a disc image of a hard drive with version 2.1 is still required, plus possibly additional hardware information. We're not in a rush to get it done, but it would be admittedly nice to have.

- Stiletto

I had one of those. Gave it away while back. Made some rooms by giving stuff away.

Re: Savage Quest Setup - Version 2.1 - Feedback for Mame Team new [Re: Stiletto]
#368179 - 07/25/17 07:36 AM

Hi thanks for the feedback.

Oh I thought you guys had all that information?
Regarding the Hard Drive of 2.1 - I will probably dump at some point.

Concerning the Hardware issues:
Specs are the same but the game can run on any Pentium 3 at any speed. Just the game goes super fast but does run.

But the game to run properly needs CPU 400-450 mhz pentium 2.
It needs the Security Dongle that goes into the printer port.

Games Runs off any 3DFX voodo 2 cards.

This from the mame team:

"Savage Quest (c) 1999 Interactive Light, developed by Angel Studios.
Skeleton by R. Belmont
This was posted by the mame team.
Pentium II 450 CPU
DFI P2XBL motherboard (i440BX chipset)
128 MB RAM
Guillemot Maxi Gamer 3D2 Voodoo II
Sound Blaster AWE64

Protected by a HASP brand parallel port dongle.
I/O board has a PIC17C43 which is not readable.
Copyright Nicola Salmoria and the MAME Team."

If you guys need any other details let me know.

Update for SQ 2.1 - Dev Setup Menu and VGA to HDMI new [Re: Escaton]
#368340 - 07/28/17 11:53 PM

I was able to figure out the code to get into the DIP switch Setup Dev mode. Which allows you to edit some of the game which is cool. Also by mail I received HDMI to VGA converter.
Now can hook the game up to any HDMI TV screen which is nice.
