The bulldozer smashing the wall it the Esaki stage in King of Fighters 2000 is a reference to NeoGeo World closing. The team knew SNK was heading for bankruptcy and it might be the last KoF game they made.

Well Eolith got the rights to the franchise and made KoF 2001 with a different development team, then SNK Playmore was founded and bought the IP back to make KoF 2002 and subsequent KoF games for other platforms. Since then, the rights have been sold to a Chinese investment company.
