88890000a Error In Mame.
#376884 - 06/15/18 07:09 AM

I've been having a funny issue with my Mame machine as of late, and after I play a game for several minutes or so, exit out of it, and attempt to play another one, a weird error comes up, as the game opens in a partial window (which won't fill the screen, and has no sound), and I will then get a sound error of sorts, which is 8889000a. In order to play a game again, I have to shut down/end the task to Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation each time this pops up. This occurred once before a while back, but seemed to have fixed itself, but started to happen out of nowhere once more. I tried disabling exclusive sound, with thinking that may have been the problem, but made no difference, and am at a standstill with this now. Any idea what this is, and what the fix for this problem may be, if anything? Thanks in advance.

System? OS? version? some more details might help a bit...

Have you tried running MAME with -nosound & see if it still crashes?

You could try uninstalling the audio drivers, see what windows(if that's what you're using) re-installs & see if that fixes it.

Without more info it's a little hard to troubleshoot.

I was going to simply try re-installing the sound drivers, but there's no internet connection on my machine. Would maybe changing the sound card help instead, if that's my only other option? I use Windows 8, and the Mame version is MAMEUI32 0.145u4 to be exact, if that helps.

Thanks, and that's what the problem seems to be, with the sound being in use by something. Like I said, the sound and stuff works fine at first, but has this issue after playing a game for several minutes or so. But I AM able to at finish the game at least, mind you, and the error only comes up after I try playing another game, after playing one for however many minutes it takes for the issue to kick in somehow. What should I try to do after disabling the sound, and will I not have any at all, if I do so? I'm obviously going to want sound after all, or is perhaps disabling, than re-enabling it something which can help get rid of this annoying error?

The first thing you need to do is update to the most recent version of MAME. As previously stated, the one you're running is very old and no support will be given

But I don't have an internet connection on my machine, and am not sure doing so would be possible for me. Would I also lose my settings if I did too? I have the games set up with the controls, and settings to my liking (such as difficulty, lives, etc), which would take forever for me to do again, if I'd lose them by upgrading.

It looks like you will need to decide what's more important to you. That said, just find a way to download the latest version and install it to a new folder- which you would really need to do anyway upgrading from such an old version. Keep the old version for now in its own folder, but you should be fine moving the roms, artwork, samples, and snaps, and other gfx folders. Do NOT copy over the ini, cfg, and NVRAM folders (also hlsl and bgfx I think if they exist). Bear in mind though that many romsets have been changed so not all will work, but a good chunk will so you can test for the issue with the latest version. If it's fixed, great- finish upgrading by finding the current romsets and such and delete your old mame folder. If not, report it and people will be willing to help since the issue now happens with the latest version.

Out of curiosity, does it do it at the same point in the same games or is it more random?

It's with ANY game, and not in any specific one. But like I said, I am able finish any game I play though, and it's just when I try playing another after does this problem pop up. I either have to wait it out until it's done doing what it's doing, or simply go to the task manager, and shut down Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation, in order to play a different one.

How exactly would, and do you totally disable it? Would I still have sound if I did so ?

Read the article, it tells you "howto" & see...

Windows 10 & 8 are very similar so you shouldn't have any trouble.

Are you using a frontend? If so, check if running games from command line triggers the problem. Some frontends (notably the one with the superiority prefix) like killing the emulator process by hooking the escape key. So it may happen the emulator doesn't have a chance to release system resources cleanly.

I have Hyperspin on the machine, though I often play the Mame games in Windows, unless it's one which will only run on the Hyperspin frontend. If this problem is happening with Hyperspin on, there will be no sound in the menu, and the wheel keeps turning on it's own, until I kill the Audio Device Graph Isolation task. Once I figure out to disable it, I'll still have sound though, correct?

All right, and I think I may have figured out how to disable it at startup now. Just want to double check to make sure it'll be safe to do this, and will hopefully be what solves the problem if I do so, and can get it back if needed, though.

Just checked the startup process, but didn't see this there, even though it's one of the programs running when I first turn the machine on. That unless I end the task, and don't re-enable it by playing a game before I turn off the machine. Just have to figure out how to totally disable it (as long as doing so won't mess with the sound, and totally kill it), if that's possible. It's just a matter of the program still not running after playing a game for a certain period of time, due to it being in use with something else, and apparently not shutting down properly/all the way.

your first avenue for anything like this should be to make sure you have the latest sound drivers, and all the latest updates to Windows etc.

machine having no network access isn't a great excuse, you can easily enough put some kind of USB wireless dongle in temporarily, or transfer drivers and windows updates some other method.

there's a very high chance your issues are being caused by something as simple as this, or a conflict with something else on your machine (some remote desktop type stuff can cause similar issues) yet you're trying to jump through all sorts of other hoops to fix them.

A friend of mine said he might be able to update the sound drivers on the machine, without an internet connection, so I'll see how that goes, if it is possible. I just need to figure out what the problem is, than I should be good, that's all. What other desktop stuff could also be the potential cause of it, which I should look into? But I'll try to update the drivers, and/or Windows if I can, and hopefully that will cure what ails things, if there's not anything else which I can still look into for now.

Good news! My friend came over today, and was able to get an internet connection on my Mame machine, and was able to install a bunch of much needed updates as a result! Turns out the sound error issue now seems to be fixed because of that, though I'm not exactly sure which update did it. But at least all appears to be good now finally, and hope I won't have this problem again anytime soon! That and even got the stuff backed up onto a hard drive, just in case anything may go wrong with the computer one of these years also. Oh yeah!
