Pretty cool, huh? As a couple of you guessed in a News Submission thread last week, the Capcom QSound chip has been decapped!

The doc has made some amazing images from this die, and it was a pleasure to stitch them. Some of the images, however, contain regions with less contrast than others, making the bits difficult to discern. To this end, there will be some development done on the online typing tool to reduce user frustration. As soon as this work is completed, we'll have ourselves another few thousand 0's and 1's to type!

Emulating this internal ROM will be a little different than usual though, since MAME does not yet have a CPU core for the DSP16. Often times when decoding the typed bits into bytes, we combine the bits using a logical scheme, then run it through MAME's unidasm program to see if the results make rational code. The unidasm program applies a MAME CPU core's disassembler to a binary file. Since MAME does not yet have a dsp16 CPU core, I have begun writing one in preparation for the bits. This time around, development will need to be done both on the front end and the back end before we have results.

It will take more time, but rest assured, there is work being done on this chip, the wheels are already turning, and it's gonna' be a bunch of fun finally hearing Capcom's QSound (after many hours of CPU core development ) as it was meant to be!

Fantastic news! I was expecting to wait much longer for progress on this particular chip.

Question about Guru's decap list, some chips are now marked "Return", does this mean "returned to Guru"? And if so why were some returned but not processed (still gray)?

I guess Guru would have to answer that.

That page is entirely for me and the Dr. to keep track of the chips.
We both know what the numbers/codes mean and what needs to be done.
That is all. Move on people, nothing to see here.

DSP16A is the CPU type. You may know it as the Capcom QSound chip.

this is NOT answer..

i ask about REAL CPU_architecture inside, not about things that all we knows (bsmt2000 is sound chip too, but now we know what cpu type is burried inside) catch connection?

bsmt2000 : qsound = tms32015 : dsp16a

DSP16A is the name of the CPU architecture. It's an architecture that MAME doesn't have a core for yet.

DSP16A *is* the CPU architecture. It was made by AT&T/Lucent in the late 80s. It's more or less a 16-bit version of the DSP32 architecture that Atari games like STUN Runner used for 3D math.

That must be why it's a public page, advertise on main page/menu.
