Help with 4 way Joystick

Hi My Mame uses a 4 way joystick for games like donkey kong. When any of the buttons are pressed on the joystick (up, down, left, right) the player moves but then stops. I tried using Advmame on a PC and Linux and also Mame32. The same thing happens. I also swapped out the switches to make sure that the switches was not defective. Any ideas on how to solve this? I am almost positive its my configuration.

It's probably not the joystick itself. What encoder are you using?

Thanks. I hooked up the keyboard and it actually started to work. Then discovered that the keyboard enumerator was emitting a character on its own, over and over. I tested on a PC and Linux, so I am betting the Keyboard enumerator is broken.
Thanks for the help.
