I find it funny that the video overlays on top of the DVD video footage look like something out of a 1990s Mahjong game. I realize these games will not be emulated for some time, if at all - I would like to take a look at those DVD discs. For research. Yeah. Research.

I'm not sure why that's funny because they *are* from 1990s mahjong games.
I don't know what annoying laws might be stopping mame from running DVDs, surely something.

Hasn't playing DVDs already been reverse engineered and open sourced years ago? Lots of free media players, like SMPlayer and VLC, have no issue with it either.

Hopefully, I don't keep up. But just because VLC can do something doesn't mean it's compatible with mame's license.

Wait MAME is open source. But the DVDs and Blu-rays not allow to run on it?

I think this might be related to MPEG decoding requiring a license. And that stuff is not open source, so it would be incompatible with MAME.

They're not DVD-video, they're just a mpeg file on a data dvd (or cd, in junai's case). One can mount the dvd image (or extract/mount the iso) and play the file in any video cd mpeg player.
The current stumble is that nobody yet has had the courage to add modern serial support to the TMP68301, and that's how the main cpu communicates with the dvd reader's h8/3002. I tried, but it wasn't trivial to do it right and I'm currently busy with other things.

Isn't there some rule where MAME wont support MPEG video because of the patents and the risk of being sued? Or did that change?

These are not high volume high price products, although apparently a couple were known porn actresses.
As for the mpg issue, couldn't this be neatly stepped around if it's still a problem, by getting MAME to use an external decoding library if available. This is what some media players were forced to do "back in the day".

That's... creative.
I mean, that's one way to get around some of the DVD licensing fees. Since the disc is not a DVD video compliant disc, I don't think they have to pay the playback fee. Huh.
I could be wrong, but that's what popped in my mind when you said that.

They're all DVDs. While I was at it I dumped everything from 1 to 17 with the exception of 2 and 16 which I don't own, as ISO images.
The sole exception in the driver is csplayh1 but that is a special case as it really is a CD from the Super-CD system. That will need a whole different driver as the motherboards are different and it uses composite instead of s-video, doesn't require a separate add-on DVD board, and uses some kind of multi track videocd media.
