How to do this in MAME on Beezer?
#368647 - 08/10/17 12:47 AM

In the manual for Beezer, to enter test mode, the instructions state this:

>To enter test mode:
>(a) Power down
>(b) Turn on while holding down 1P / 2P start switches

I can confirm this works on a real machine. How do you replicate this in MAME? I tried a few things with no success.

hold start1+start2 (1+2) and press F3

note, it only works in the parent set, presumably it was added in that revision and doesn't exist in the older one.

Hi Haze, thanks for the info. I'm using MAME 188 by the way. Just tried various combinations.

On set 2, holding down 1+2 and pressing F3 has no effect. Holding down just 1 and pressing F3 reboots game (does not go into test)
Holding down just 2 and pressing F3 reboots game (does not go into test)

On set 1, holding down 1+2 and pressing F3 has no effect.
Holding down just 2 and pressing F3 reboots game (does not go into test)
Holding down just 1 and pressing F3, game goes into test.

On my real game, I admit, I only tried holding down both 1+2 and turning on (which works). I didn't try just 1 and just 2. I won't be able to do that tonight, I'll try that tomorrow.

But what about MAME? Is there a problem there? Holding down 1 + 2 definitely works in a real game and definitely doesn't work in MAME.

it definitely works here, I tested it before posting, it's probably your keyboard not able to send 1+2+f3

looks like the game code only cares about start 1 anyway tho, as you observe.

Sorry to be reviving an old thread, but I revisited this yesterday and I am happy to report, I did get it to work now too.

After the game boots and you are in game over / attract mode, press and hold start1 (1) and then press F3.

Only works with set 1. Does not work with set 2.

Note, other combinations did NOT work...
press and hold start1 + start2 and then press F3 did not work
press and hold start2 and then press F3 did not work
all combinations on set 2 did not work

Very useful thread revival this time around. It is a good reminder since it means the source code file can use some updating...especially the combination settings of when able to enter 'Test mode' needs to be corrected/verified etc. And also someone that has a pcb and any recording device that can take photos and do video recordings of video output from an actual Beezer pcb and post them in this actual thread later just to show what is missing or if colors are still not correct.

--
src/mame/drivers/beezer.cpp

Notes:
- To enter test mode, hold down 1P Start and 2P Start, then reset

TODO:
- Improve sound (filters? A reference recording would be nice)
- Schematics in the sound area seem incomplete, there are
several unknown connections
- Watchdog timing (controlled by a 555)
- Figure out differences between the two sets (test mode isn't
working in beezer1, instruction screen is different)
- Verify accuracy of colors

MAME is a living document.
While we all hope things inside the MAME source code are 100% accurate, sometimes they are not. We encourage anyone with the knowledge and initiative to correct known incorrect information by sending in source updates (preferred via Git as a Pull Request) to update any information in error. It is easy to say something is wrong and needs serious updating, it takes a bit more effort to actually move forward and fix issues.

Agree. I hate seeing informative posts slipping by unnoticed. Good to see Joe did provide a useful post in explaining when test mode exactly appears (key combination). The color video output Beezer comparison would be useful in case Joe has any recording devices to take photos or videos and upload them here.

I didn't know Beezer.cpp was out of date until going through finding a specific ASCII pcb diagram layout that I need to copy some ASCII images from (for future planned submission of For Play's Rally pcb layout and wiring pinout).

Source code needs serious updating? Fuck off. A comment needs some corrections, that's all.
