I read about the MC Hammer LCD game but for some reason I thought it would be a Hammerman LCD game.

I love these dumb games. I still collect them when I find them and play them sometimes. My grandfather loved them and I ended up getting his collection when he passed away years ago. I'm curious about the background and game itself - will that be able to be shown in-game using MAME Artwork like some of the other similar games? And just curious as to why none of these have gotten artwork yet, is it too hard to scan/edit the backgrounds or something? I have a bunch of LCD games so I was asking because maybe I can help on some of them that I own if I can be directed to the proper place. Thanks MW!

You can check this thread on Bannister and look for the answers yourself. But basically it's a teamwork process of documenting, decapping, photographing, visually dump its content, building a LCD mount to turn on all the segments, scan LCD and background, vectorize LCD screen, label segments, turn it all to MAME artwork and finally add to the driver.
MAMEdevs will correct what I'm saying, but unless I'm mistaken it's easier to do if it's a destructive process, if you want the games returned I think it takes some more time to process. I'm sure someone else will fill you with better details.

It is a lengthy thread on Bannister's forums web site, but well worth going over if wanting to read older posts from previous years. As for background artwork, it looks like that is now covered for example. I am not sure who is doing the background art. As for the game data images, those are being photocaptured and then traced to a format SVG data file and is considered the data (ie: rom image) The thread even though a few years old, has some informative posts that can better explain the process.

hap occasionally visits and posts here. He would be ideal person to ask.
In meantime, seanriddle still has several dozens more of lcd handheld games to work on.
It depends regarding Konami handheld or Tiger Electronics handheld games. Some of the Sharp cpus can be emulated, but there are other variations that are not supported at this time.

the foreground graphics get vectorized and included as an .svg in the romsets
the background graphics get scanned and made available for download on various resource sites such as http://tsk-tsk.net/net/extart/
I imagine if the SVG support ends up allowing bitmaps they'll be integrated into them.
This might seem a bit unusual as they're not ROMs as such, and could be considered 'analog' data, but exceptions are sometimes made, they're essential to the things functioning as as much a part of the machine as the actual roms.

Not yet dumped, just won the auction yesterday.

In way too good condition to be sent off for dumping; but fortunately, there's a Zelda in the lot of around 30 handhelds that I'm doing the funding drive for!

I like how every single title is a big name release. The handhelds were always made based on a previous enormous success.

Wow - so much info to process here. Thanks to everyone for all the links and everything to read up on. Also - thanks for the links to the BGs done already - I found Gauntlet and am super excited to try it! Unfortunately many of my games have sentimental attachment coming from my grandfather, but I have been coming up with some lately for a few bucks that have sound issues or whatnot that would be ideal for this. I will be going through the list and contacting some of you privately to see what exactly I can help with after reading as much as I can on what has been done already and how. Thanks again and Merry Christmas, MAMEWorld

Tiger Electronics should have teamed up with Willie Nelson and Snoop Dog with an lcd game somehow involving cannabis as part of the gameplay.
>The handhelds were always made based on a previous enormous success.
I am glad Mattel Electronics led games stuck to their root with 1970s led games being made in general instead of some promotion product.

Tiger Electronics status so far --
Kudos to Sean and hap with patience to plow through all these games. Far more titles than what was expected and a long ways to go.

The handheld museum has several entries, but probably missing some entries such as what is on Tiger Electronics page.

Here is what Sean first listed last year of Tiger Electronics items that were sent to him....it may have been updated along the way.

By arranging the lists, here is a comparison of what is already completed and supported versus what is still not yet completed, but is in Sean's hands. One can see why Sean and hap will be busy for next couple years. ;-)
