Beginner Help Needed (hope this is the right category)
#375628 - 04/15/18 08:03 PM

running mame version .161 paired with rocket launcher and using hyperspin as a front end.

I am capable of successfully loading and playing games through hyperspin. Only trouble is only 341 of the over 8000 games are available to play with the rest being in red. And of the 341 there are many that either start to load and kick back to menu of load into an unplayable game.

Im wondering if either my mame version, romset or both are not complete, working or compatible?

Any help is greatly appreciated and after thoroughly reading the rules im hoping i have not broke any with the above post.

Thanks
Blake

Both. Your version of MAME is almost 3 years out of date, and it's most likely that the version of your ROM set doesn't match the version of MAME that you're using.

ok so i know the mame version is old as its .161. And i downloaded a romset for .161 but you think they still might not be compatible? Ive had several people tell me to download an even older version.

before this current version i have .186 i think of mameuifx and i could not find any full romsets for it so thats why i went to an older version.

thanks

Beside roms, You should download BIOS & DEVICES packs as well and put them in the same folder with roms.

I hate to tell you this but, you're talking to idiots there...

There's no real reason not to have a current up to date version & set. Even if you had .186 there have been a lot of improvements added in the, roughly, last year or so.

But if you really want to play those on your Windows 95 machine, you can fire up Mosaic or Netscape & keep looking for an ancient outdated set..
OR
Get CMPro(ClearMAME Pro https://mamedev.emulab.it/clrmamepro/) & have it rebuild a working set from that older MAME binary... It should be able to piece together a working older set from a newer set. It will just have to rename, reorganize, & delete a lot of the newer correct roms. Never tried going backwards but it should work...

If that doesn't work, I'd suggest a premium newserver & reader account & you can figure it out from there... (I know that far back is still on mine)

Roms, bioses and devices are not updated/changed/renamed simultaneously, but always is better to use The newest MAME & rom sets.

He had .186 to start with...

I did read everything, & they told him to download an EVEN OLDER rom set!
Smart? Informed? Knowledgable? I think not...

If he was going to download all of that, why not just go ahead & update to the newest version/sets? It would sure be a whole hell of a lot faster & easier? Unless he had some emotional connection to v.161 or .186 which wasn't mentioned. And that's still not a good reason not to. Most likely being a beginner they'd have been back with questions about such & such not working in that version or another & we all know how that usually concludes.

It's cute that you'd defend someone who'd rather see you amputated at the wrists.

"idiots" = whoever told him to use an older version in the first place.

so as i was configuring i noticed that mame does not launch. it has a window that blinks quickly and thats it. no error message, no menu, and nothing loaded. Im wondering if i need to have a higher .netframework as my vista currently only has 3.5 i believe and sometimes after booting gives me an error message but then moves forward without issues.

Everything is smooth other than that.

So you want exotic unnecessary stuff like RocketLauncher and HyperSpin yet you refuse to use a dedicated modern GFX card.

What are the exact specs of your PC that you're working with here?

yea i was wondering if ive reached its end but it has been able to successfully utilize a full mame setup with rocket launcher and hyperspin but it was mame .161 and the romsets were very incomplete so i switched to .196 and this is what i would consider my last hurdle.

im not against buying a video graphix card and installing if thats what necessary? Just was hoping to finalize everything tonight. ive got all the steps covered with a beautiful 20" magnavox CRT connected with an HDMI to composite adapter and boy does it look good.

As always im all ears as the computer end is not my specialty although i dare say im cutting my teeth. when i started it could not even go online or play a video. now were here at the doorstep of success!

Try installing this:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 offline version ~96MB

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 online version ~3megs

If you wiped the hard drive or re-loaded the OEM image that came with that craptop, this DX9c version is probably not on there & MAME needs it to run.

If that doesn't fix it, come on back! GL!

Nvidia drivers won't do much good on a computer that doesn't have an Nvidia GPU.

It has been determined by looking into the collective crystal balls of the mameworld.net forums that your laptop has Intel X3100 graphics.

i downloaded it this morning but was not paying attention and did the offline link. not sure if it needed to be saved in a specific space but i gave it its own folder in the drivers section. unzipped and started the .exe file and completed installation. i was rushed so im not positive everything went as it should. so i might go back and redo. i tried opening mame and did get the command window to open up for considerably longer then before but nothing else happened after it closed back down.

I actually think people are wasting their time with this.

It's a laptop, running Vista, with a really bad Intel integrated GFX chipset. That gives some indication of the age of the machine.

There's a very good chance MAME isn't going to run at all on it (non-power of 2 texture requirement etc.) and if it does the performance is going to be awful for most drivers. (because a Vista era laptop isn't going to have a good CPU at all)

Maybe some god-awful old version of MAME will run (and give a false illusion that things are being emulated properly) but the current versions that are actually good have steeper requirements.

I completed the download again and theres no change.

This computer may not be powerful enough to run this version of mame but it has successfully run .161. Ive had the entire setup working with rocketlauncher loading the games and hyperspin as the front end. Playing through to a 20" Magnavox with an HDMI to composite adapter. The Image was crisp and gameplay was fine on both schmups/fighters/and side scrollers.

Thanks

sometimes things like -video make a difference.

I had a core 2 duo laptop with an nvidia card which could use motherboard ram, but it was insanely slow. When using direct3d MAME ran fast until you did something like pressing tab or press f11 to show the frameskip.

Back then -video ddraw was an option, but that has unfortunately gone now. You can do -video gdi though, or -video opengl

If you find the last version of mame that ran fast (without any mame.ini, so it's using defaults) then that will give you a clue. If you're not using defaults, then try using defaults.

so far I'm still unsure where to or how to write/install/or change to GDI or opengl? I looked last night and could not find where to enter the info.
As of now the system is still set with .196 and I cant load it to a menu of any kind and I have not (to my knowledge) changed any settings, unless by pairing with rocketlauncher or hyperspin default settings would have changed.
.161 runs just fine. no issues of any kind other then finding romsets that match.
