Mame0147 not parsing mame.ini correctly?

According to the manual, MAME should parse its .ini file, even if renamed. So why doesn't mame0147.exe parse mame0147.ini ??
mame.exe parses mame.ini just fine, though.. So what's happening? Anyone know?
Exceprt from manual
Configuration options ---------------------
-[no]readconfig / -[no]rc
Enables or disables the reading of the config files. When enabled (which is the default), MAME reads the following config files in order:
- mame.ini - .ini (i.e. if MAME was renamed mame060.exe, MAME parses mame060.ini here) - debug.ini (if the debugger is enabled) - vector.ini (for vector games only) - .ini (based on the source filename of the driver) - .ini (for clones only, may be called recursively) - .ini
The settings in the later ini's override those in the earlier ini's. So, for example, if you wanted to disable overlay effects in the vector games, you can create a vector.ini with the "effect none" line in it, and it will override whatever effect value you have in your mame.ini. The default is ON (-readconfig).

I'm not sure that behavior still exists. Is there some specific reason you need it to be mame0147.ini instead of mame.ini?

I did a survey of some old MAME source and version 0.111 behaves the way you describe, parsing mame.ini followed by exename.ini, but version 0.122 no longer parses exename.ini, so the change happened somewhere between those two versions. I'll try to narrow it down.
The bottom line is that it's been at least 5 years since MAME behaved the way described in that documentation. I don't know if it was a deliberate change, or if someone just rewrote the code and forgot to put that feature back in.

I like how it behaves the original way, it happens to fit nicely with my style of working and organizing things. It's handy when hosting multiple versions.
One instance why I use an older version is because the sound in Liberator seems muffled and the ships in Tac/Scan aren't completely symmetrical. Perhaps I can tweak something, perhaps not. So I just use an older version for those. Older version on older hardware. That's all.
And having mameXYZ.ini "track" mameXYZ.exe makes a lot of sense. And if this feature can be made to work again, well, it simply makes m.a.m.e just a tiny bit better.
Been following this project since its inception back in the 1990's! And I tend to do things old-school style.

Another option would be to have all your different MAME executables in different directories with the directories named exactly how you want thing organized so MAME and the ini files can stay at the default naming.

I have everything setup just about right, a few more tweaks here and there; With 4 versions all in their own sub-folder.
Today, now, I have no idea why I was trying to mash it all into one massive folder. I supppose old school habits (and directory structures apparently) die hard at times.

Why do you want all four? I only have two. 0.147u1 and other one that just have the Cave games only. Note: Cave games and other MAME is back up onto a 8GB stick.
Just keep the ones that have games removed. No need to have ton of MAME.

I probably have the same 2 you use also.

Speed consideration on older hardware. And some accuracy in TAC/SCAN, the player's ships don't look right. But that's a topic for another thread.
Eventually I'll combine everything into one or two configurations.

Nice surprise about this shorter form. Can you tell us what it is you are talking/writing about? Has any info. about this shorter form been posted before (and i just missed it)?

I'm using 0.147 and 0.68
0.68 for a lot of the older games and vector games. Surprisingly, 0.68 gives me a better image than 0.147 for those.
And 0.147 for Liberator and Primal Rage.

WOW!!..where did you find a rom set compatible with such an old build.?
EDIT:
Ooops..this might construed as a request for Rom download links.
It's not.

I think you would rebuild them with rollback roms.

I recall it being removed (and yes, it was like >5 years ago). I think I was the one who put it in originally, but there's not too many reasons for having different options for different binaries anymore. You can always just wrap it in a script and pass in extra cmdline params if needed.
