Mame Won't Start
#365398 - 04/24/17 04:44 AM

Running MAME 0.184 32 bit on an older machine with XP. I can't get MAME to start. When I double click on MAME.exe I get a quick flash of a black screen and that is all. I redownloaded and reinstalled. Are there any common things that might cause this or what other info is needed to diagnose the problem

MAME also runs perfectly well on XP, but it is not mentioned on the fact that presumably no-one is running XP anymore.

What that page doesn't tell you however is that MAME no longer supports older video cards as of an update during 0.180, those of which do not support non-power-of-two textures, and will bump you down to non-accelerated GDI compatibility mode in that case and probably turn a 1990s-era game into a slideshow in the process on machines with on older CPUs e.g. Pentium 4. In some cases OpenGL may still work at an acceptable speed but most likely MAME may still give a warning about the video card not supporting PBO if the card doesn't support that either.

Instead of double clicking it, open a command prompt and run MAME from the command line. Let us know what the error is.
