Gaelco WIP
#367748 - 07/11/17 11:58 PM Attachment: speghetti.jpg 647 KB (0 downloads)

Peter Wilhelmsen and friends dumped the coprocessor firmware for Gaelco's Glass. It's capable to dump the other Gaelco games from this era as well.

Fantastic news!
The biggest bet that MAME DEVS,are near to win!
I know it is not easy at all, to get other Gaelco's games, because if I've read well, every game has a little different code!
TH Strikes Back, for example,is different ,even if it was the same year about!
Ok i am not relative with programming,so I hope you can lough with it!
But even so,this is a superb progress!
Many other games and systems still have issues ,but Gaelco's of 90's was the hardest!
The "ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE" HAZE used to say,is now ALMOST POSSIBLE.
Is like defeating Real Madrid ,or Barcelona!
My wishes after that,to see them working ALL!

yes, assuming the method is reliable then one of the biggest hurdles is over.

the next challenge will be finding boards that haven't yet suicided, these things were never meant to last this long.

some of the games are quite common, other boards we've seen the chip on (Spanish / Italian gambling games) we've never even seen a working copy of.

I've never believed for a so quick reply by one of the best!
Maybe i don't understand well, about what boards you mean!
I though you already have some of them, dump them, and included in MAME,but for the game i mention (TH strikes back) i've found an info, for a Korean board, maybe unprotected!

In any case, and if understand wrong,or if it a misunderstanding that is a request, you can ignore that post,or a mod could deleted!

Loaning is also a miracle....
All these are not so easy to be found!
Gaelco is a great company, but the pcb's are rare, not common like sega etc...

we've seen boards of TH Strikes Back sold in Korea before and they've been protected like the rest of them, although they could have been imports in the first place.

obviously unprotected versions are still interesting alt. versions even if the protection chips get dumped tho as there's a big difference between a set that was compiled without any of the protection code, and a set where we're emulating the protection device.

Well ,OK you know far much better your work, and what to do!
I hope one of the imports you already have,to be the good board you want!
And of course ,i am sure a protected,is more interesting for a programmer, because the biggest challenge it is,the biggest satisfaction it is!
Thanks for your effort to explain to me,with patience and politeness!

Alligator Hunt is the one they don't have an offer for. The bad news is that there's about a 50/50 chance of bricking the board instead of dumping it. The good news is that if a second board is found and dumps successfully, the dump can be used to un-brick all boards (including ones that suicided due to the battery dying). So stock up on cheap suicided Gaelco PCBs quick ;-)

If this turns out to be successful, this would be another huge pcb preservation achievement and prevent a few more games from being "lost". What Charles was able to do to get Gaelco Master Boy emulated in 2006 was amazing itself and fortunately that game didn't have the MCU protection hardware.

I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out with these specific Gaelco games.

Snow Board Championship, Squash and Thunder Hoop don't use a Dallas MCU, nor do any of the Biomechanical Toy PCBs we've seen.

Also a lot of Alligator Hunts don't, or have been converted to use unprotected Roms already.

Be sure of what you have first ;-)

Does this mean that the remaining protected Gaelco games such as World Rally 2 and Thunder Hoop 2 could be emulated ?

there is still a high degree of risk, but yes, ultimately that's the idea.

good thing we're not dealing with one of a kind prototypes tho.

Assuming the roms haven't been replaced, yes. Those 'Do Not Touch' boxes with the Dallas MCU, SRAM and battery inside are the things we're talking about dumping.

Keep in mind the thing WILL suicide if you look at it wrong tho, so probably better to ship it safely to work that out rather than trying anything yourself, you generally can't even replace the batteries on them using the CPS2 trick they're that sensitive.

there's also a 50% chance of it dying in the process without getting a result, which I guess isn't so bad with alligator hunt because you can just put the unprotected roms on it if it dies, but you do need to be aware of that risk.

There are rumours of a Biomechanical Toy with the Dallas, but we've never seen one.

Master Boy does use a MCU, though a conventional EPROM-based type. In fact, it's the same type of MCU (HD647180X) that Toaplan used as a sound processor in their early-'90s games, none of which had sound in MAME until 0.181 (and there are a few that still haven't been dumped).

yeah, the difference was Gaelco used it with an external data rom and there were weak functions in the internal rom (not checking string bounds etc.) that allowed Charles to get code running on it.

the Toaplan games took much longer because they don't use any external ROM at all so there was no way to try and exploit them, in the end it took the decapping.

>Master Boy does use a MCU, though a conventional EPROM-based type.

Nuts...I forgot to mention Dallas or whatever the name is, but nevermind about that part. But good to see some updates along the way for improving Master Boy. What Charles had done back in 2006 was impressive itself in getting game data extracted and allowing game to be eventually emulated. Guru and maybe a couple others had posted in previous years of no way that Master Boy could be emulated since Gaelco protected the game pretty well. Guru's work is very good, but it was nice to see Charles prove Guru wrong for that one game.

Anyway, I hope what can be done with getting around Dallas mcu protection can help save Gaelco games and allow pcb owners to keep their Gaelco pcbs in working order for another decade or so.

So in layman's terms, that LPGA is intercepting all communication between the CPU and RAM, and then you manipulate the intercepted data to dump the firmware? In other words, a Man in the Middle attack?

Good start regarding saving the Gaelco games and also trying to still keep pcbs running as long as possible. Some of the Gaelco fans can start celebrating.....or maybe wait another few weeks once everything is worked out.

--
2017-07-17

A number of DS5002FP chips were dumped using the method published by Morten Shearman Kirkegaard and Peter Wilhelmsen as documented at (#2484)

http://www.afdelingp.dk/files/articles/ds5002fp/ds5002fp.pdf

namely Touch and Go, World Rally 2, and TH Strikes Back

a 2nd verification pass is still needed on them from additional boards, as bad bits existed in World Rally 2 even prior to extraction (steering logic was broken but bad byte was identified and fixed as the code for that command handler was identical to World Rally 1) and TH Strikes Back is crashing at the first boss (could also be a CPU core issue) Glass was also dumped, but at the time the data wasn't extracted, only the code, and the board has since died, so needs redoing.

Machines promoted to WORKING
---
World Rally 2 [Morten Shearman Kirkegaard,Peter Wilhelmsen, David Haywood]
Touch & Go (World) [Morten Shearman Kirkegaard,Peter Wilhelmsen, David Haywood]
Touch & Go (Non North America) [Morten Shearman Kirkegaard,Peter Wilhelmsen, David Haywood]
Touch & Go (earlier revision) [Morten Shearman Kirkegaard,Peter Wilhelmsen, David Haywood]

btw: for the newbie users....newcommers here.

About 10 years earlier in summer 2007, A. Naive had figured out how to resolve the CPS-3 protection and CPS-3 games were starting to be emulated in MAME. Both old MAME.net and MAMEWorld and other Lev owned ztnet sites were runneth over by the large CPS-3 fanbase and twisty and RocLobsta had to deal with crowds here on MAMEWorld.info site as well. And Haze's blog was overwhelmed and then some after 'kidz' kept hammering his wip updates.

iirc Haze was occasionally getting trolls yelling at him to speed things up.

Almost like a large ton of Star Wars fans cramming into a movie theatre just to see latest Star Wars release.

But these games do not have the popularity of CPS3, so I doubt a wave of annoying rom kiddies are going to bother Mamedevs for World Rally 2.

That doesn't seem to ring true in my memories. mameworld forums left ztnet in 2003 and I don't remember exactly when Gridle gave up on the mame.net forums but I'm pretty sure it was long before 2007, and the only other ztnet forum that could have gotten kiddie traffic from it is Retrogames but they've been a corpse since before 2007, I don't recall them getting a kiddie influx. There has really only been one kiddie influx ever, that was cps2 (other than console emulation fights in the 90s, but I wasn't even around for those).

Yep. My mistake with this part. I knew KC and Roc had MW opting out, but forgot exactly when. I am fairly certain that MW was hosting Haze's older blog and Haze's blog kept getting pounded with everyone wanting to see CPS-3 updates. twisty had to pull the plug a couple times on Haze's MW hosted wip site to lessen bandwidth usage.

I thought old mame.net was still around up until about early 2008 until Aaron Giles closed it.

While CPS-2 was the biggest draw and maybe NEOGEO as a runner up, it seemed CPS-3 was also fairly sizeable. iirc When Haze had a wip update with CPS-3 protection finally figured out, the comments section was somewhere between 500 to 700 comments. It was a sizeable number. This was before Haze and others could begin work on improving the emulation of CPS-3 hardware.

Yes i am one of them,really fanatic,for 2 reasons...
One is obvious ,some of my favorite games, came from Gaelco, with all this rocky music, and especially the 2 clones of TOKI...Thunder hoop 1 and 2 (th stikes back)!
Also Biomechanical toy,Big karnak ,and glass, but all of them are emulated except th2!
The second one is much bigger, that the one missing game...
The great progress of emulation ,a work of so many people for at least 2 decades.
Gaelco was the biggest, the almost impossible,so...
YES I'AM CELEBRATING ALREADY FOR THIS,EVEN THOUGH MY FAVORITE GAME STILL DON'T WORK!
And i will wait for it,days ,weeks, months,or even years,without complaining,because i was waiting since 2000 I discovered MAME,so a little time longer,is not so important!
My really compliments, for your GREAT work, and of course my regards and wishes for more progress in any "difficult" system!

PS Well I am 57 ,so i hope guys ,you won't delay ...thaaaat much!

If it had the plug pulled it would have been because he was posting daily mame builds, not from usage of his blog.

The site might have been there but the forum wasn't open. Aaron didn't close the forum. Maybe Stiletto remembers dates.

That's a big number for an emulation thread, I don't recall the size. The system had all of 1 hit (3rd Strike). CPS2 had countless hits, and was active during a more popular era for arcades.

Okay. I forgot about that.

The CPS-3 wip had a lot of comments. Maybe some of the comments were posters talking to each other.
