Mame CHD Question....
#374488 - 03/09/18 02:29 AM

hello there! just wanted to ask, since I've tried to search for the answer, but haven't had much luck. I haven't updated since 0.168, but I think that it's time. my CHD's that I have are in winzip format. can I convert them to 7-zip format to save a little hard drive space, and will MAME still recognize them? I don't know the compression ratios, but I understand that 7-zip is much more of a space saver. I know that getting a larger hard drive is the easiest solution, but my rig won't accept anything larger than what I already have. might be time to just break down and upgrade. I dunno. but for the time being, I need to save some hard drive space if I can. any help at all would be much appreciated. thanks in advance!!!!

The CHD files are already compressed, so You ain't gonna get any (or VERY little) HD space by compressing them again.

There's a couple obscure sites out there where you can download complete sets in T7Z format (Torrent 7-zipped)
And these T7Z are most efficient when it comes to space they consume and compression they apply to clone data that's near identical to other sets.

Unfortunately, the popular PD site does not offer T7Z for users that may otherwise have space or bandwidth limitations because dealing with zips are easiest for them.

The T7Z sets are also good for quick portable solutions if you happen to have the desire to copy across a complete set of ROMs or Software List ROMs for someone locally that you encounter in RL.

yeah, not sure why PD went full retard.. but they did, I've already had to deal with people moaning that the MAME set doubled in size, and blaming the dev team for adding crap, when really it was a choice they made on that site to no longer offer the best compressed set and instead offer the worst compressed one as an alternative. Obviously these things are out of dev control, but the impression the public got was that it was mamedev who suddenly added so much data that the set size doubled overnight when it wasn't, there hasn't actually been a big update in a long time.

Unfortunately the other sites are much more difficult to find tho.

I agreed Haze. When I went over there and then I saw they said they stop using the t7z support. They said t7z will corrupt the ROM's and too slow to repack. I never had a problem using t7z at all. I don't even repack the whole set unless I have to split the sets up or merge the sets. I still use the t7z.

If they told you guys the size of those zips too big then tell them to blame PD on that.

nah! I never blame mamedev for anything, other than wasting my hard drive space with impunity. lol. thanks!
