The Konami custom K056230
07/04/19 08:22 PM

Now that I figured out how Midway V Unit (along with Gaelco 3d and Midway Zeus II) pcbs communicate with each other, I noticed the Konami games that support networking requires the same exact setup as the previous three for a >2 way link despite the fact they use those RCA cables in a LANC communication protocol. One other difference I noticed is Konami used additional code to stop the game, "Network Error" to be exact, if a network cable or game is disconnected.

Why do I mention that specific Konami custom? Well I can confirm this custom was previously used in Racin Force's sub pcb (obviously not present in open golf). I can't confirm if this chip was used in their Polygonet hardware but hope to find a high quality pic of the main pcb. This can only mean the following:

  • The linking is done from a processor, cpu or dsp; the custom makes use of that serial connection for the LANC protocol using RCA connectors.
  • The custom itself supplies the serial connection.
  • LANC may be a derivative or rs232.

If LANC and rs232 are really the same, then it would be wise to add rs232 ports to src/devices/machine/k056230.cpp. Keep in mind it's still one serial port split into two. The later games starting with NWK-TR and ending with Viper removed that custom in favor for an FPGA combination but still use the LANC protocol. I have a feeling it's an enhanced version of the 056230 so that device could be usable. Then again if this coding is the same, I may as well rename the device to "konlanc.cpp".

Thanks to all
