A question about the console 'DivX' flavours
09/29/17 01:06 PM

I know there's been a lot of specifically MAME stuff on here lately, but I wondered if I could post something else, vaguely emulation related.

Having found my old copy of Enter the Matrix for XBOX when looking through some storage, it got me thinking about the weird DivX version that consoles of that era had. (The Factor5 SDK, as I recall). It seems like some hefty tricks are going on to make all this work, as the video files that come out the other end look nothing like standard DivX AVI containers, but when played through the console are brilliant quality.

Knowing there are a few commercial console types around here, I wondered if there was any magic tricks in their version of DivX that weren't in, say Divx 5 (the contemporary version on home computers), as it's clear that whatever container they do use has seemingly escaped the attention of the Multimedia wiki, which seems to hold details on nearly every other generic video thing for console.

Not expecting anyone to violate NDAs or anything, but I did wonder if there was some way of getting back to a more standard DivX playback for these, as without a working console any more it'd be nice to see some of those mini movies again without resorting to console emulation.

AGEMAME HQ - was once a thing, now isn't really.
