From my perspective, the people moving from MAME to RetroArch are generally the annoying, irritating users against whom we've railed for literally years: The ones who are only interested in playing free games.
Despite Haze consistently proclaiming gloom and doom for the project, anyone can look at the list of contributors and commits on Github, and see as plain as day that the number of contributors to the project has absolutely exploded over the past two to three years.
The "free games" crowd are flocking to RetroArch, which if anything has left MAME free to establish itself as the "everything else" emulator, and I'm rather happy with that. I don't know if Haze has forgotten or what, but for years MAME devs have been consistently frustrated by users only interested in using it for free games, and now the optics have changed to make it more obvious to potential contributors what MAME is all about. That seems to be paying off in a big way, just not by the metric Haze uses, which is the number of users who will throw rose petals everywhere he walks.
